  • 78 Mk1 GLS 4 door project

hello all this is my mk1 project that i just bought last week. it is in reasononable condition, paints a bit wrecked on the roof, but the floor pans are so perfect with no rust whatsoever, neither does the spare wheel well. there is some decent rust in the bottoms of the doors, which will be cut and plated asap, unless someone has spare doors for sale it has the 1.6 with a 4spd. the interior is in great condition only one tiny rip on the drivers seat. it was so so cheap so im not to fussed about the rust etc

i have some 13x 7.5 inch deep dish wheels which i found in a mates shead for a carto, and will get pics up later. Plans are coilovers, tyres for the wheels, fix rust, spray in flat beige, and rebuild the engine. hope u enjoy.

also, this mornig i went to take it for a squirt around the block, but the gearbox would only select 3rd and 4th, but not reverse, 1st or second? and when the clutch was fully out when i went to drive off, it was as if the the clutch was still in and let itself out about 5 seconds later. my thoughts are the slave cylinder is stuffed?? any help would be greately appreciated.

thanks guys yeah the only rust is in the bottoms of the doors, i suspect from 10 years of stuffed doorseals so yeah. if you know of anyone with a front drivers door and back left door to sell it would be greatly appreciated.

Keen to see the wheels man! Sounds interesting.
          What brand are they?

I've got a spare white drivers door less seals, but there's a few thousand K's between us so that might make a difference. It'd be yours for free if you wanted!

I wish I could get lucky on a set of wheels like that!

Nah it's not worth the shipping. Shouldn't be hard at all to find one near you.
Hell you might even get lucky and get one the right colour!

clutch doesnt have a slave cylinder, its cable operated. typical clutch cable failure results in the inner cable getting stuck in the worn through sheathing that surrounds the cable at the firewall. just pull the cable out where it enters the firewall and have a look (unhook it from the end of the clutch pedal assy first).

if the gearbox is only selecting 3rd and 4th, its usually because one of the rod linkages has popped off at the gearbox. have a look at the shifter linkage setup carefully and you may find one of the socket ended rods has pooped of the ball end on the gearbox.
