    Hi Guys

Looking for some ideas for this...want to upgrade brakes, suspension and engine

Current line of thinking would be brakes and suspension first, followed by a 2.0 8v swap, however should i go for something further either 2.0 16v or ???...dont want to go crazy on the spending but want to be happy with the cars all round ability...

    cheers for your input

          What year is it?
Shotgun the airbox when you do an engine swap!

          Looks pretty tidy.

Yeah i will keep it looking as stock as possible...maybe a chin spoiler and some other accessories that you can get from South Africa

Thinking black rims might look cool too, but thats a personal choice

Mechanicals is where i want to do most of the work, just have to decide about the engine - 2.0L 8valve seems like the easiest option, maybe with a bit of work for some more bhp...surely a bit quicker than the current 1.3L!

              you sure it's a 1,3???

it doesn't look like a small block, and the water outlet on the head between 3&4 cyl's indicated (to me atleast) that it's a 1.8.

Air box looks similar to what was on my old import mk 2.

as for upgrades. I'd put mk 1/2GTI brakes on the front, with a new/bigger MC and booster from a mk 3. These will bring the brakes into the 21st century! Combine that with a nice cup kit, and some nice wheels, i reckon i'ts a go-er.

I think its a 1.3L or 1.5L, either way it isn't a 1.8L...it goes ok, runs out of puff early than my '76 1.6L

Thanks for your brake upgrade suggestions...will go that route first, followed by the suspension & rims...

should be a nice daily once its all done

                      Hi all

Wondering whether any of you have contacts in South Africa that could help in getting parts over here. Have been in touch with these guy Autostyle Motorsport Autostyle, but dont have a mail order service for some reason!

                      Cheers

                        Its a 1.6, late model.
THe small block, 1L, 1.1,1.3 , 1.4 look different, they are a crossflow engine and sit on different mounts.
That is probably a tired 1.6L.
For performance on a budget, put a 2L bottom end under that head, with a cam if you like and the carby that you have and hold on.
It will up the compression and will go great.
The head is hydraulic and has the late style second oil return and so will fit straight onto a 2L bottom end, or 1.8.
Thats probably the best motor to drive in a Mk1 and one of the cheapest swops going.

i had a GTS citi from south africa for my first car. was told they dont rust proof there cars over there and sure enough mine rusted out beyond repair so id suggest looking into it before it ends up like mine being used for parts.
also to get parts from autostyles you need to organise your own shipping, not hard but is a pain otherwise jump onto some of the SA forums the guys over there are pretty helpful.

The car is in very good nick, thanks to the previous owner..just have to get it rego'd and then put a 2L bottom end as Golf Loon suggested
