The yellow car was "not good" when purchased. A quick trip to Pete's and a set of GTI calipers and disks later - much better. Then Adjust the rears right up. Then adjusted the cross-bar up so that the brakes are *just* not grabbing (I had to take a shave off the driver's side fork to get sufficient adjustment). Overall result - very good!!!

      Brakes

I've got mk2 gti calipers and mk2 ate power discs on mine and they do a great job of pulling the car up very rapidly.
Brake fade only seems a problem now as the pads are very thin and discs have worn down.

I recall on ebay there was a guy up here in qld selling brakes in a package calipers, pads and discs. for around $280. I will try and locate this guy as i'm not sure if it was only the one pack. only a few months ago.

      Cheers Dave

If you really want good brakes without taking out a mortage a good combination is

        1. G 60 caliper & carrier

        2. Carrier adaptor bracket (www.momentumotors.com)

        3. 280mm disks

        & bob is your aunty

P.S. you will also need to improve the hydralic aspecta as well

        9 inch booster & 22mm or 24mm(kombi) master cylinder

you can also use scirocco caliper if you can get them, but it will cost about the same as the above & you'll have only 256mm discs

        Cheers Ian

            magna rotors

I believe i read a post on here a while back about fitting vp commodore calipers and magna rotors and with little modification you've got 279mm vented stoppers.
A look at the wreckers will probably net you a near new set of the early magna rotors and a pair of calipers.
The rotors need the centre hole opened up i think the calipers need to be spaced with a 3mm washer, and as the commodore bolts are larger you'll need a collar on the retaining bolts to hold the calipers still and in position.
That's what i remember reading about the conv hope that helps i might try it some time soon just out of curiosity.

            Cheers Dave

Rear brakes can be adjusted as above, or replaced with drums from a Golf CL or SEAT Cordoba which are bigger and slightly better designed. No other mods needed, just bolt on
Not sure if these are the same, but I've used (MkI) Passat rear drums in the past - they're bigger (by about 20mm....)
Almost as easy these days to obtain some MkII rear disks...

Standard MkI brakes *can* be made to work ok, but only is adjusted really well (see Bluerex's post).

Problem is that these days MkI's are getting a little long in the tooth, so linkages tend to be a bit worn...

Much easier these days to just upgrade

I wouldn't under estimate this advice - I still remember hot-footing it down the main straight at Oran Park in a MkI with completely stock brakes (we're talking solid 238mm front disks here don't forget), *and* still being able to stop at the end of the south circuit from 150kph+ without cooking the brakes The pedal feel was good too...
The difference is that the components were ~7 years old or less.
The oh-my-god-feeling of MkI brakes these days (I think) is mostly due to the age...

So don't cast dispersions on VW for crap brakes In MkI's - they were really well setup when they rolled out of the factory.

I mut agree with that, when I first got ny mk2 gti it had new 239mm discs (vented) with new pads ect
It impressed me just how well it could stop on such a basic setup in good condition

How would Audi A4 brakes and discs fit on a mk1? You couldnt swap ABS over or would this affect the use on a mk1? Could rear discs and hubs fitted?
                      A4's are 4x100 correct?

                        No, 5x112.

                        A3s are 5x100.

How fast does your car go?
When you know that, you work out a brake package to suit!!!
                          & what is your budget?

You are very limited with front options due to the mk1 hub setup
Rear disc is easy (use mk3), but newer bigger drums are less hassle to do, because of the handbrake cable & pressure regulator

Cars Slow but still does the speed limit and the brakes scare me at the moment! Id just want the breaks to pull me up with out breaking covering the break constantly incase i need to break quick.

I think first of all i need to learn how to adjust the drums as i recon one might be leaking!

Also need to adjust the cable and i recon the throttle cables

But was wondering as i noticed an audi with 4 stud setup and thought since VW and audi are similar i may be able to swap them over as they were vented etc and alot bigger. Other oprtion was e30 bmw drums and disks?

Alex just slap my mk2 GTI brakes on. Jake has a booster I sold him he'll never use (long story) and you just need a decent MC. Sorted!

You can deduct it from the cost of those wheels we've been courting over forever
