  • Starter motor mounting bolt

    G'day,

My car ('77 1.6 GLS) barely cranks over, and wont start. Jumpstart doesn't help, will roll-start O.K, battery is charged.

I discovered that the lower mounting bolt of the starter motor is absent, making it wobbly – maybe causing a bad earth connection?

It starts if you hold/clamp the starter in place.

Does anyone know what sort of bolt it is, and where I can get one – is it identical to the top one?

Should there be an additional earth strap from the starter mounting bolt?

    Thanks.

The starter bolt should be the same top & bottom & could be gathered at a wreckers from another mk1 or any good nut & bolt place

Should be around the M10x135mm Not sure on pitch sorry

If the battery is charged, there can be number of reasons why your car won't crank or is slow to crank incl. why you only have one bolt holding it in!

Poor earth connection on the body, gearbox & battery terminal.
Poor battery positive connection on the starter & battery terminal.
Excessive voltage drop across the Battery-starter lead. Meaning the lead is stuffed
    Ignition switch is playing up.
    Wiring loom problem.
    Internal starter problem.

By the sounds of it, I'd start by securely mounting your starter motor & go from there.
