  • Insuring a MK1?

If you guys don't think it's too private to share, how much is insurance for your MK1?
More so wanting to hear from the people with working shtbombs like mine.

I'm probably only going to get third party insurance, as any accident would probably write my car off anyway, and full comprehensive insurance would cost me both arms and possibly one leg too, as it does for most cars for me.

I have a few red crosses next to my name on the cops database, so my premium's are ridiculous.
I'm hoping I can get Third Party Insurance for <$400.

    So, if you don't mind...
    1. Who insures you?
    2. What's your premium/Full Comp or 3rd Party?
    3. Agreed value/market value/other bonuses?
    4. Excess? (age & disqualified in my case)

    Thanks.

My current daily is on third party with fire/theft through allianz it is like $32 a month and i'm under 25 but with a clean record. They actually wouldn't insure it for full comprehensive as its over 25 years old, which might be something a lot of the insurers do now?

      1. Shannons
      2. $180 3rd party or $700 full comp
      3. $2500
      4. $300 + $1500 under 25

That was when i had it insured, and i am a girl and it was when i was 23... Never lost my licence so this probably wont help you...

I've found Shannons a bit exxy but they're really good, you just say what mods you've done and they don't ask any more questions like other insurers i.e. i put mags on my car (end of story with shannons) other insurer wants to know size, width etc etc etc.
I'm going to the pub... I may be some time...

RACV insures my 1968 Mercedes for about $660 a year, which is pretty amazing given my record.

I want to pay it for the year as I already have enough monthly bills.

Your circumstances are a bit different, but the underage excess is the killer there. With RACV it's only $900 as far as I know. I think they introduced a $1000 disqualified driver excess too, which makes my excess $2300 I think.

If it makes you feel any better, it costs me $1200 a year to insure the GTR with a $500 excess... And i'm still a girl, and i'm now over 25...

The $1500 was for under 25 unlisted driver i think... Sorry should have said that, go online and do a quote at the Shannons website... Can't hurt...

I hate doing those bloody insurance quotes!
Haha no, $1200 doesn't make me feel any better! I looked up insurance for my VR6 when I first bought it and it was over $3000 a year with the majority of companies I got quotes from.

                  Insurance companies love me.
I'm a one time disqualified driver, 20, and have made one claim in 3 years of driving. I guess that's all they need.
                  Oh, I'm a guy too... +$1500...

I wonder if I can legally be regarded as a hermaphrodite and get cheap-ish insurance? Hmmmm.

So what exactly do you have in your stable Steph? Sounds like you've got a pretty good combination of cars.

short answer is people flog them, and crash them so they have high rates.
I was insured with shannons also when I had my mk1, was about $550 a year with a $300 excess, plus an age excess of $650 <25's. Although it was a little high, they were great with mods and alike and I had it covered for $6500. Also had a crash in my name so wasn't too bad considering

Dude, insure it under your parents/guardians name and go down as a regular driver looks to be your best bet...

                      In my stable....

Me (i live in the shed)
Matt (lives in the shed too)
Mk1 GLS, MK1 GTI, VR6, Polo, Datsun 240k (google pictures, pretty good looking car), Skyline R32 GTR.

Yes - it is a massive shed...

Should probably stop clogging up this thread with non insurance related stuff...

it cost me $900 through shannons fully comprahensive to insure my daily mk1 GLS. agreed value of $4k! lol. sold it for $1k.......i also have my torana insured with them. very very modified. all engineered though, i pay around the $1100 full comp with agreed value of $12k. but i'll be upping the agreed value soon so that'll change.

they were exceptional when i made a hail damage claim in 2007. ended up paying for most of my bare metal respray on the torry. (they paid $10k, i paid $5k)

at the time i was 22 with a spotless record.

not bad really. excess is reasonable $600 basic, $800 age.

                        cheers

                          Hmm that sounds pretty reasonable.
I'm not sure how much I'll mod mine. I don't think Shannons want to insure me because I am a disqualified driver? Must check that.
                          Thanks for your input mate.

My folks probably wouldn't help me out with that. I don't think it'd be any cheaper anyway, not with RACV as far as I know, because as soon as you dictate a second driver, they ask all the same questions, like driving experience, history, age etc.

Damn, that's as awesome collection! 240K? As in a C110?!!!
                            Okay, I'm jealous.
