Got a bit of a cooling problem

I just put a aftermarket temp gauge in, and when engine up to temp it says around 85 to 90 degrees, but on the temp gauge on dash it says 3/4.

The sensor for aftermarket one is on the bit the top radiator hose connects too, and the one for dash is on the side of the head closest to brake reservoir.

Also ive noticed the top hose is quiet swollen, and the bottom fine, but the top hose gets rather hot while bottom is warm sometimes cool.

Any idea's? i got a new water pump to put in, maybe thats problem?

Could be thermostat if bottom hose is cold. Or pump could be rooted.
Gauges on Mk1s are unreliable, you can see when the engine is damn hot if you pop the bonnet.
