  • 1.1 southafrican to 1.6lt conversion

    hey guys.
so i have a 1.1 southafrican import and was wondering if anyone knows how hard it will be for me to fit a 1.6lt motor and gearbox into it.
i ahve been told that it can't be done easily.

    hey mate

yes thats true, its because the 1.1lt motors have a different engine mount position on one of the chassis legs, ill try dig up some comparison pics to show you, BUT, it can be done by picking the welds of the engine mount and welding in the 1.6-1.8 engine mount where it should go

edit: the green one is from a 1.1-1.3 block you can see the engine mount sits ontop of the chassis leg on the left of screen, this is like yours

NOW this pic is of a 1.6-1.8 engine block you can see on the same side the engine mount is missing and is located under the chassis leg

    cheers

The mounting point weded to the chassis on the drivers side rail needs to be ground off and a 1.6-1.8 one welded on in the correct spot.
      All rest will bolt in.

1.1 and 1.3 are the smallblock Mk1 engines and lean back, hence the mounting point.

The 1.6, 1.8 and 2L are the big block ones and lean forward, so have the other mounting position.

cool thanks heaps. i wondered if that was the case. what about the gear boxes themselves does anyone know if they are the same? i got a yellow sticker and i dont have first gear so i need to put a new box into it. i figured might as well put a new motor in while i am there haha. but if the boxes are the same i might just do that for now and get the engine sorted later.

Make sure the gearshift is adjusted correctly before you go ripping boxes out... As for the engine and box I am stripping a perky 1.6 in a few weeks, come have a test drive if ya want. will save you the rhs engine frame mount.

Just a question on this, Will caleb be able to use his same steering rack and linkages with the 1.6 engine?

Wouldnt think the steering rack would be any different and as long as the existing trans is an 020 code then the linkages should be the same ( unless your changing from a 4 speed to a five speed at the same time)

The 1.1 and 1.4 gearbox is different to the 020.
You will need a 4 or 5 speed box from a 1.6 or 1.8 Golf.
Rack is probably the same, shifter is different and shift bracket will be needed from a 1.6.

I sort of want to go 1.6 to 1.1, just because the little blocks and positioning looks awesome!

yer so i have had a really good look over everything, and i def need a different linkage, not sure if that means a different shifter too, grant i got my hadns on a mount for free, but i think i may need to get the linkage off you, i will see what i can dig up. the rack is fine, im going the 1.6box too so i have the corrent mount for that, i need a front engine mount tho cos the starter is on the opposite side on the 1.1s, does anyone know if the wiring needs to be mucked with much? i imagine it quite straight forward.
