  • Oops - got a little distracted...

Ok, so this weekend I was meant to fibreglass/kevlar my fueltank. It got sandblasted, a nice coat of POR15 and was ready for resin and mat action.

Then I started thinking about the problems I had at the last Khana with fuel starvation (seems weber 32/36s don't like rapid direction changes) and the offer Pete (Canberra VW) had made to help fix it ...... I now have a shiny 'new' 45 DOCE and manifold to play with in the Yellow Golf

I had to get a new foam filter insert ($8.00) so the pics don't show the air filter. She started almost immediately and the noise is fantastic!!

    Thanks again Peter!!

        Looks great mate

Is the engine in the yellow car relatively stock?
Big cams and ported heads are great, but DCOE45's on standard engines are fun too - huge torque. Just what you need for 'Khana's
And yep - sound great too...
        Enjoy

Yeah you have to love that induction noise. I cant wait till my intake is louder than my exhaust.

I have done nothing (bar a bit of a clean and electronic ignition) to the yellow engine (yet) Steve would know for sure , but I think it's pretty stock. I have been offered a G-grind cam... and I have a spare set of extractors... see now I am distracted again!
Just cant drive it till tomorrow when I can renew the rego

                  Wow!!

Took her for a run this morning. No tuning (other than a rough idle speed adjust and a quick wrench at the dizzy for some more advance). Wow what a difference!!! Apart from the noise, she pulls like crazy in all gears (7 grand, screaming and still pulling). First is a challenge but manageable, second sees 90 come up scary quick . I like it!!

Did I mention the noise? At one stage I couldn't hear the tyre scream over the induction

                      Silly question time...

Standard 1.6 '76 golf - is it ok to sit/cruise on 4k rpm? (approx 115kmh)

Not used to this high revving, as I have only had the car for a couple of weeks.

                      sorry for the dumb-ass question...

7 grand sounds like a lot of revs, I'd be scared of breaking something.

Youd have to be trying hard to break a 1.6 golf engine, even revving it to 7grand

Mate, you sound like you're having a ball with this thing - the rally car might have to wait
Goes to show what even a stock 1.6 will do with decent induction

Personally, I'd go for the extractors and skip the cam - I'm assuming that you are using it for khana's, where you want good torque and responsiveness, not big HP...
I guess we all wonder what possessed VW to saddle the engine with that silly Solex...
