  • Engine removal options

    Hello,

I'm removing a dud diesel motor from a Mk1 today. I have done this before using a variety of methods (box on, out the bottom, box off and then motor out the bottom).

I recall it being a pita getting the motor/box out with the drive shafts in, and with the drive shafts out, the car cannot be rolled about (destroys front bearings).

I am after some tried methods for removing the motor/gbox together with minimal fuss, no crane and without removing the drive shafts. Is this too much to ask?

I'm sure it can be done, but you'll have to at least remove the intake & exhaust manifold's to clear the driveshafts.

If you have a couple of spare outer CV joints bang them in & tighten them up. They don't need to be the full 230-240Nm. Just really tight.

Then you can go about your business without worrying about destroying your front wheel bearings.

The way I normally go about it is by removing the driveshafts & have everything unbolted except for the side engine & gearbox mountings.

Then lower the car down to the lowest setting on the jackstands, so the wheels are still off the ground.

Then using the strong jack ( I've got a 2Ton I think with a piece of old conveyor belt rubber on the jacking plate to avoid damage to anything!) & a help from a couple of mates as supports/balancers, lower the engine incl. inlet & extractors/box assembly out of the car as one onto a skate board (yes! A skateboard!) or a very strong old doona cover.

Once the assembly is on the ground, shuffle the jack out from under the assembly & either roll it out or drag it out.

Its not really all that heavy to drag or manouver.

I've done this quite a few times now by myself without too much drama, but having some mates help makes all the difference!

    Many hands make light work!

      cheers!

manifolds are off and so is the injector pump so it should come out relatively easy. I'll let you know tonight how i go with it.

Anyone who wants a 1.5 diesel long motor and box is welcome to come and get it!
