  • Good front seats for mk1

Hi guys, just got my hands on a 2door gls the other week, coilovers going on soon and im used to driving great handling cars, but one thing ive noticed is that the original seats are...crap. my cornering speeds throw me out onto the passengers so i decided i need to get some good front seats. i was originally thinking the front sporty seats you find in mk4 "sports" and gti, they hold well, are very comfortable and releltivly cheap BUT i forgot they are only in 4 door models in oz so the don't fold forward :/ i was thinking maybe mk5 gti seats but im guessing they are gonna be pricey. does anyone have any ideas or has done a successful conversion? i want to try and avoid autotechnica bucket seats from repco, a pair for $299 sound nice but they are crap. any advice would be much appreciated

a simple basic upgrade would be a late mk 1 or mk 2 recaro, then probably something from a VR6, but that'll start being costly. All these will 'fit' reasonably easy (either straight in, or with minor modifications) if you start going mk 4/5, you'll have to start with custom seat rails etc, and for all the effort you may as well have just gone a proper bucket.

So yea, mk 1 or 2 recaro's are quick and easy, and should be reasonably cheap.

I got some Nissan 2 door seats (guessing a late model sivlia)
And they are very comfy, but custom brackets where made to fit them

Mate had Mk3 seats with minor mods to fit

how common are mk2 recaros though? i'm guessing they'd be as rare as.. rocking horse ****
i'd like some diferent seats too. i sit way to high. and with coilover i almost hit my head on the roof over some bumps

depends how handy you are with a welder.

might technically be illegal if you're modifying the rails without getting an eng cert.

Golf loon should be able to help out with some different seats.

btw, what colour is your new mk 1?

I wouldn't bother with the VR6 seats, the bolsters are nearly always knackered. I'd find a set of MK2 GTI seats and get the bolsters re-done more agressively and new material laid over.

MK3 , SEAT and Audi seats of the same era can be modded fairly easily to fit into a MK1.

on another note, im thinking of sticking on 16" Borbet A replicas (can't afford the real deal) but i can't find a decent pic on the net of what they look like on a mk1, anyone seen anything?
