how to undo a drive shaft nut?

Hello,

I have a set of hub assemblies with the outer CV joints but no drive shafts so there isnt much to stop the shaft from turning when i try to undo the drive shaft nut.

Any suggestions???

Get a big adjustable wrench to hold onto the outer CV (from the rear) and then support it/postition it so it doesn't move whislt you get your 30mm socket with a really long torque arm to undo the nut.

naturally, WD40, heat, rattle gun may also be of assistance.

if you have access to a vice, rattle gun and lots of WD40 you might have one solution

otherwise, again stick it in a vice (with a rag wrapped around it of course!) and get stuck in with a torque bar

i just realised that i can bolt a wheel to the hub! that should give me a bit more to hold onto!

alternatively, you can get someone to jump in the car and squish the brake pedal as you stand on a 2m steel pipe.

i tried about a 2m pipe and still would not budge untill i had some on put their foot on the brake... then it was easy as. can't recomend the foot on the brake enough!

There was a topic on this not long ago. They said your not suposta use a rattle gun, when i tryed it it didnt work anyway.

Using a long pipe on the end of a braker bar works well just dont stomp on it because i broke the auto gear box doing that. Your also suposta undo it while the car is on the ground, there is less that can go wrong, like the time i smashed my lip when the brake sliped.

i guess im screwed then cos the hub is not on a car, and the drive shaft has been cut on one side and removed from the outer cv joint on the other.

Is it possible for me to install a drive shaft into the outer cv joint, then install the hub onto the car, put weight on the wheel then attemp the 2m pole?

Any advice on outer cv joints and how they are attached to the drive shaft?

It can be a **** fight trying to get them off the shaft. I ended up buying a complete shaft w/ boots cvs still intact. Was much easier to replace the whole thing

the outer CV's just slide into the hub,. once the nut is off, a quick tap or 4 with a hammer (from the outside side of the hub) should see the CV pop out.

I think if you can somehow fix the CV you should be able to do it.

Bust out the arc welder and weld it to something big and heavy even!

what i really wanna know is how the driveshaft connects to the outer cv joint so i can reconstruct a front end. Then i can use brakes/vehice weight to stop the shaft/hub turning when i attack the nut.

If you pull back the boot there is a spot you can acces the c clip thing. It's hard to make the clip release from the groove in the shaft, last time I did it I had to mangle the clip and pull it all the way out via the access point before the cv would release. I had a horrible time trying to do this!

Just drill a bunch of holes in the nut 'till you can crack it off with a cold chisel. The nuts are a service item anyway, readily replaceable from VW for a few dollars.

Failing that, bolt it up inside an old wheel and weld the wheel to something that wont move, or at least a long lever.

If you get real stuck bring it over one day and I'll take a crack at it for you. I did a set just a week or so ago so Jarred could have 256mm discs on his MK2.
