  • Official MK1 DIY and FAQ thread

Hopefully this thread can become the place where people can put links out to threads that they have found useful technical information and so on regarding the MK1 specifically.

If you post a response to the thread you think should be added, then the mods can collate them into categories this first post to make it easier.

I think it should have Peter Jones somewhere in the title.

Maybe "Peter Jones's official mk 1 DIY upgrade thread!"

Ooops, that was my fault, a cut and paste error..

        Fixed now.

I'll have to extract some bits and pieces from my bigger threads and make them stand alone so they can be linked to.

          Cheers Mike.

Best place (internationally) for servicing parts (gaskets, seals, other rubbers, filters etc.) that you guys know of?
Places for major bits in Australia? In Melbourne?

I bought a hatch strut from Veedubmachine, and I think the price was okay and I'm pretty sure it's on it's way to me.

I'll remember all my little questions when I'm going over the car at my parents place again. Memory fails me.

More n00b questions I'm too embarrassed to start a thread about:

            1. How the bloody hell do i remove the rear guard trims without breaking something?!?!?!

Mmm okay I've forgotten what else I was going to ask.
            Thanks!

I sussed out what they are today at tradeschool Mike: the lowest fixation point is a pin type scrivet, have a close look at it, you'll see a separate circle in the center.
Try and dig that out if you can, or push it all the way through. Either way you'll probably have to replace it when you remount the splats, so I wouldn't worry about damaging it too much.
The upper two things are (11mm I think) plastic nuts on a big thread that's just inside the wheel arch, mine were pretty well stuck, and I think I broke the middle threaded section that's actually a part of the splat thing.

I'm yet to try removing the lowest one again, so don't take my word for it too much.
                Hope this helps you.

Any tips/tricks to remove the rubber sound deadening stuff from inside the front guards/wheel arches on a MK1?

I've been going at it with a chizel and hammer, but there has to be a better way???!!

I want to remove it, rust convert the surface rust underneath and replace it with new stuff.

wire brush on an angle grinder would probably work. A heat gun will also loosen up the gooey stuff a bit.

Cheap as chips. Easy stuff to get, the US is a good place for just about everything you need, even with shipping factored in. Otherwise everything is available simply at auto parts stores. That's if you can do stuff for yourself.

Just out of interest is there anyone that specialises in non gen repalcement panels and such mostly for the A-pillars, scuyttle panels and front floor pans?
