Well my Golf flew through the 2nd inspection, the info from blackgti helped, thanks again. The inspector I had today was as good as the 1st was BAD. It turns out the guy today used to work at Lanock's & then for Eblens.
The first guy reported the ball joint must be replaced & when I got home I checked it & the play was at the top of the strut. I removed the spacer from inside the bearing & after measuring turned 1mm from the o/all length-- Problem solved. The other item I replaced was the tapered fuel hose between the tank & fuel line. It wasn't leaking in the form of drips but was damp & it was on my list of jobs to do.
I can now look at the tooth belt timing & maybe remove the injectors for cleaning the soot in the head, the car has trouble keeping up with the traffic!Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.
