I imagine it would change from car to car. I only know how low you could do (with a mk1) cause i've had a bit of experience & done alot of research regarding mk1's and different wheel width and offset/suspension set ups.

I'm not here to start an argument, but....
Something sounds not quite right I reckon
Cause I've had 7" with a ET25 & they fit flush with the rear arch & that was with GTI flares.
If you change that with a 8.5" & ET33, the rim should sit out another 0.435" further out of the arch & also 1.064" towards the shocker!!!
Looking at your pics with the 8.5" my ET25 7" sat further out to start with, so in fact your wheel should sit further out.
The front rim sits about right though in the arch & when working out all the measurements, the 7.5" ET33 should sit 0.064" further in than a 7" ET25.
Hope this all makes some senseLast edited by Oneofthegreats; 01-03-2010, 05:55 PM.

A good quality cup kit would have short stroke shocks, that work in conjuction with lowered springs for proper ride and handling.

i know with me rolla if you go low, you gotta get short shocks to suit otherwise the rebound and travel is stuffed!!
Not sure which brands do them now though. Its been a while since I've played around with standard style shock/springs setups.
But Jamex use to make really nice & short front strut bodies & with 1" lowering spring, you'd not only get awesome ride quality & travel, but you'd also lower the car 2-3+" too!
I've ran then until the shocks blew out, but still have the strut bodies. Just need the tops machined out to accept some Koni yellow inserts.
I also just used a standard set of Koni yellows with the height groove circlip bodies, which allowed you to adjust your heights. Long before Coilovers too!!!!!

Yeah ive got Spax lowered springs (2-3" roughly)
and they have short stroke inserts too, the ride is awesome. not too harsh for daily driving, but plently firm for a good hiding
Still want coilovers for height adjustment though<space for rent>

im still not comvinced they are 8.5 wide, im not trying to spoil everything you got going on... im all up for super widness ect, but i need more info on the wheels, how did you know they were 8.5 wide? where did you measure the width from? and if they are 8.5 wide, youll impress me bigtime! coz thats a great achievement to do on a mk1, especially with such a big diamater wheel
do they have any marking stamped on them to show you how wide they are?
cheers

I'm sorry but I'm skeptical too. Also, it doesn't look like you're that 'low' (well not belly ached atleast)
A side on shot of the car? that shows it's stance perhaps?

I've seen Mick's (dado) car in the flesh, and the rear is low, tucking 1/3 of the sidewall if looking side-on. They are definitely 8.5" but at ET30-something. The camber is quite negative though (looks more than -2 to my eyes...), which is why it's just flush. Not running any camber shims. Is there a difference if he's running drums at the back (compared to discs)? Or is it the same track between the two?
His fronts are 7.5" ET33 I think he said, same tyres, but currently not tucking tyre as any lower and the perches will catch on the tyres. The inner rim is almost touching the strut body, so you can imagine how close his setup is at the moment. Also some mad camber there (not as much as rears though). He wants to go lower (reverse raking right now) but can't until the fronts are using spacers (at least 15mm to clear the spring perches as they're about to catch on the top of the sidewall). I told him about your strut tower spacers, and I think helpers can be taken out (they're JOMs) to get lower without winding the spring perch down. Maybe not a combination of the two, but one or the other should be enough to get him where he wants.Last edited by rayray086; 02-03-2010, 11:06 AM.
