You can undoo the nut and threaded shaft up the guts of the cooler and replace it with a smaller shaft from a Mk1 oil filter housing and run it without a cooler.

Or the cooler is the same as Mk3 and I have secondhandies for $50 or Brand Newys at $150.

I have used koala degreaser from supercheep, to degrease cooling systems, add a litre to the cooling system, run up to temp, remove bottom radiator hose, let engine cool, run hose through system and repeat until clear. Expect to make a mess when you do this.

    Good Luck.

      Thanks Matt.

I will wind some Koala through it tomorrow and report back how I go. Thanking my stars it appears not to be a head gasket or worse at this stage.

I bought a couple of Golfs in the Uk that people thought had blown headgaskets only to find it was the cooler

Somewhat easier and cheaper to fix.

So this afternoon saw me flush the cooling system with degreaser, then fresh water and refilled with coolant. The system is still continuous but the oil cooler has been bypassed.

The night fell and I took it for a decent run. The best news is fingers crossed, that there is no oil in the coolant that is visible and no pressure in the coolant when you open the bottle!!

I hate to admit this but back in the late 1980's early '90's when golfs were plentiful and when I had very little $$, I used chemiweld in my golf - worked a treat, except I had to treat it every 6 months or so.

I'm going to hold off replacing the oil cooler for a few weeks as I'm busy with things and want to make sure the oil does not return!

Gets me thinking, will this effect the blue temp sensor?
