  • 77 Mk1 2door FOUND!

I have found a 77 mk1 2door gls. Solid body But... The trasmition is leaking, breaks not working and engine is held together by cable ties and string! And it's not registered.

What am I in for, worth it for $1,200? Roughty how would it be to fix?

A few things to look for:

Check under the carpet for any signs of rust.

Look at A Pillars for any sign of dodgey repair or paint bubbles.

Check the front of the side sills into and under the guards for signs of rust.\

Check around the base of the windscreen for rust or bubbles in the paint.

Check the bottom of the doors.

As far as engine and transmission, if you're worried about faults there, Mk1 Golfs aren't the car for you. If it's good, excellent, if it's not, well you'll just have to fix it. The brake system is relatively simple and not stupidly expensive to fix up. Not being registered isn't a huge deal. Rego is easy if you fix the thing up how it should be.

1,200 bucks is a bit steep for something in the condition you mention. If you can get it for less that a grand and everything else looks solid, then i'd go for it. It IS a 2 door after all.

Preen is pretty much spot on.

Bodies are much harder to replace than engine parts & other mechanical stuff. So a good shell is a great start IMO.

we can only know the answer to this, if we know more about you. Preeny's given you some good tips - but consider this: if you arent mechanically minded, arent patient, dont have any spare money at all, and havnt owned a 30 year old car before - dont buy it. If you do have the money, patience, time and will power, and a bit of mechanical nouse, then you might even be rewarded.... maybe

            More About Me

Well, it ends up that i changed my mind, and so did the guy that was selling it...

More about me, well I'm not mechanically minded, I do have patients, but being a student still not too much dough lying around. My brother has a 65 beetle, so he kind of knows about older Volkswagens.

Recently I found another golf, not sure of the year or weather it is a 2-door or not... But i have my figures crossed, i only saw the car from a distance. If it doesn't work out, how do I get to the sales thread on this forum?

if you find a good body thats the perfect start anything around it can be replaced or repaired pretty easy they are a simple car, depends on what your doing with it if you use it as a daily it'll rust and weather anyways so a average car is fine if your looking for a mk1 to fix up for a weekend driver and some fun a good body is less of a head ache and can spend the $$$ in other areas.
