  • Fuel Cap Won't open

    Disaster!!!

The fuel cap won't open on the MK1!!

I have tried everything, and yes I am using the right key.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

It seems like the lock on one side won't release.

If I can't get the fixed I won't be able to make it tomorrow coz I got no petrol left.

    Any suggestions?

Get some graphite powder to lubricate the key/lock and some patience. Stand on your left leg while holding your nose with your right hand. Then whisper to yourself 1000 times, "This lock will open anytime soon."

That should just about do it. But you must get the graphite powder first if this elaborate plan has any hope of working.

Attempt to turn the cap while repeatedly locking and unlocking may work. Which cap type?

Not sure what you mean by which fuel cap type?

There are a few different ones out there. There are the common plastic ones that have the key no flap, and then the cabrio with the flap that covers the lock. These are star shaped. There are also aftermarket ones that are round, usually alloy.

I have the key one, no flap.

Gonna get the powder tomorrow and see what I can do.

i had a similar problem i think. can't remember exactly how i fixed it, but try applying pressure as if you are turning it in either direction as you work the key (if one direction don't work, try the other). good luck.

Still struggling with this. Have used the powder but no luck.

Looks like I'll have to head to the garage tomorrow coz I need to get to Vic roads this week.

I ended up just shattering the cap.

Only have a screw on one at the moment.

Based on age and sometimes a non-genuine cap is used the best option as stated before might be to pry it out and replacing it.
