    Hi,

Apologies for being too slack to post anything for quite awhile.
I could claim to have been too busy, but that would probably be a little lame,
    even if it was true...

Doesn't mean that that I haven't been giving the GTI a regular thrashing though, because I have

I'm not entirely sure if this sort of thing belongs here, or in the motorsport forum. Maybe someone can enlighten me.
Actually, things seems to be relatively quiet in that forum respect to watercooled members competing in anything, with the notable exception of volksee77 (great post mate!).

Mostly, it's been motorkanas for me, but there's been a khanacross, and a couple of supersprints.
I'll leave the supersprints to another post, and describe the motorkanas here.

The two venues I'll talk about here are the Oran Park skidpan (couldn't resist having another go before it disappeared!), and Ansell Park (next door to Richmond RAAF base). Two very different environments, to be sure.

This video is my attempt at getting the GTI as sideways as possible
Not fast, but lots of fun.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXZV84r0ZNk

That day completely stuffed what was left of the tyres - one of the rears had metal hanging out of it at the end of the day!
Matt will be happy to know that the handbrake cables are still holding up.
My son and I were both competing (as usual) - he still can't catch me on 'khanas, though he is getting closer...

I seemed to have spent a bit of time at Ansell Park for some reason - don't know why - it's as dusty and bumpy as hell, as you'll see.

Here's a couple of videos of my son stirring up some dust.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSrGcX3f0Rk

The little bugger beat me on this one:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc7EVSFMaEI

Here's what the car looked like part the way through the day.

I probably wouldn't recommend Ansell Park if you value your cars' presentation!
It's as bumpy as hell too, so not so kind to your suspension.
Fortunately, the GTI has a full Bilstein rally suspension under it.

Don't seem to have any photos of Nirimba TAFE khana events for last year.
The car died on the last visit (TCI unit), but that's another story I'll get back to later.

Will probably do a bunch more khanas this year - I like 'em.
I'll have to go get some more daggy tyres first though...
    (for the tarmac events)

I'll post some video and pictures of the Oran Park GP supersprint last December, when I get some more time - stay tuned.

Hope that I got the video and image links right in this....

    Ian.

Nice to see yo back Ian.

Glad car is still holding up.

For the newbys its a genuine 1983/4 GTI from Engerland. if its not a Campaign, its pretty close in lateness and genuine features.

Those vids look like awesome fun.

The only down side is having to clean up the car & the interior, if you left the windows down! haha

Wish I had the guts to do an event like this, but I think I have to stick to black top racing, as I reckon with the way the power comes on in my car, it will just dig holes & get itself bogged!

Its an awesome thing when you can enjoy things with your family. I miss it alittle now, but only cause we have different interest's.

I'd done a couple of track event's with my dad when I first got my licence. He was much smoother than I was, as I was too aggressive & hard on the equipment! haha. One event I managed to flat spot 4 brand new yokahama's! Now that was an expensive weekend! It was only a track one lap sprint too! haha

      Great work!

          Hi Ian,

I met you at the Oran supersprint, I had the white GTI. Looks like fun in those videos, I can understand why your tyres are used up though! Actually did you find that the oran supersprint was really harsh on the tyres too? I couldn't believe how ripped up my tyres were after that, I think the surface was really run-down and abrasive.

Out of interest what car club are you with, are you part of HDCC? They seem to be quite active in motorsport events which is good.

You're not alone, I'll be out agin this year doing as many of the Group5 speed events as I can get to.

My write up's are usually in the motorsport section and sort of double posted back into my "wreck to race" thread. (See signature for link)

I used to do a lot of Khana's back in the day, might have to give it a go again this year. Looks like a lot of fun was had.

              Thanks

Leaving the window down is definitely *not* recommended
I've done some tests on dirt where I managed a full-blooded 4-wheel drift - quite awesome to see that wall of dust and dirt hanging outside the window

A bit of power can come in handy on tarmac, but can be tricky to modulate well...

I like khana's because it's *is* a great family thing.
Even my wife did it in the earlier days (in another MkI I might add)

Arno! My goldfish memory let me down - couldn't remember your name.
You've got a great looking GTI there yourself
It was a close result - just pipped you
(My son blitzed both of us though)

Oh, yes, the Dunlops were *really* chewed up at the end of the day.
You have to rember that my son and I did a total of 58 laps of the GP circuit (including warm-up laps).

This is what they looked like at the end of the day:

I'll have to take a better photo though.

I'll post a longer description of the day, but here a video:

                http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_W5cKE-TMs

My son's driving. He reckons he was pulling 170 - 180 kph at the end of the straight...
A little more fearless than his old man...

                Ian.

You're talking about the Oran supersprint right? I'm not sure which results sheet you have but I actually got an 86.33 http://www.hdcc.com.au/docs/results/...print 2009.xls

We were in different classes because of my engine mods. My tyres actually looked worse than that, I'll get a pic. I probably could have driven a bit smoother

                      Sorry mate - I can't read
You are absolutely right - geez I must have had a bad day that day....
I blame it on creeping senility...

That's teach me to check the figures more carefully - the significant digit being a '8' in you case vs a '9' in my case.
                      My apologies for that.

16th outright - That's fantastic. You're in good campany there in amongst some exotic (and not so exotic, but quick) machinery

Can't believe that your tyres looked worst that that

Anyway, hope to see you out this year!

Sorry Arno Arno - didn't answer your question.
                        I'm in TCC (Thornleigh).
They are very active in motorsport too.

In fact, TCC and HDCC had an inter-club comp going last year.
Not sure how it turned out, but I think HDCC were in front last time I looked.

Last year I was in Mini Club Club (MCC) as well.
The're a good bunch too, and also quite active.
They also had a good grass motorkhana and khanacross ground up at Riverwood, but they were losing that I last I heard...

I have toyed with joining HDCC as well (or maybe instead of Mini), but we'll see.

Hi Ian, don't worry I'm going senile as well! Yeah my tyres were brand new Toyo R888's and I really scrubbed the edges of the grooves pretty badly, it took actual chunks out. There was another guy running the same tyres as me and he had the same thing happen. I think it was a combination of the compound and the really rough surface. Would have been nice to get a few more laps in to get them to the right temp too.

I have heard good things about TCC. I was pretty impressed with the enthusiasm and turn-out at Oran park, HDCC seems quite active in motorsport. Some of those datsuns with CA18's and SR20's were bloody quick.

I have also been to one track day held by a circuit club I found out about through Will. They aren't supersprints and you don't even need a CAMS licence, they seem to have a lot of events as well. Mostly fast jap cars. This year I really want to get the golf out to a few of these events. I might see you at a few more. Are you going to the VW Nationals one at wakefield in May? I plan too.
