  • Negative camber with drum brakes?

    Hi guys, I need to get some rear camber going (around -1.5deg) on the mk1 to help with some clearance issues. Any ideas?

    I was considering a pair of shims with say -1deg from Euro Sport. Will these fit with rear drums (mk1 kits are right down the bottom)?

    Most/all of you may be aware of this DIY from VWvortex, but they fail to mention if its possible with drums (if a difference even exists )

    The car is on some hottuning coilovers which arnt camber adjustable incase this matters.

    rear camber is created usually by adjusting the angle of the stub axle, so drums or disc's doesn't matter, ie spacing the axle off the trailing arm.

    those kits will fit no worries, they are all the same up to mk4's maybe even mk5's when they went to independent rear arms

      G'day datzed

      The camber & toe on the back of a mk1 is fixed & it doesn't matter what shock/spring or coilover setup you fit. It will always be fixed, unless you fit camber plates etc.

      Just for interest sake. The stock camber on the back of a mk1 is a tiny bit more than -1 degree anyway. Something like -1 15" (minutes) give or take a around 30-50" (minutes)

      So you'll end up doing all this work for less than half a degree!

      I reckon if you have clearance issue's, I'd be tackling your rear arches first & if you have already, tackle them some more with a bigger hammer! haha

          Cheers for the replies guys. I've DIY guard lipped the rears but it still rubs with any passengers in the back or if I take a corner hard. Raising it anymore is not an option :p

          I'm gonna have to have a look at the rear end this weekend to see exactly how these shims fit. I'd like to get -1deg more than what I already have. No doubt I'll have a few more questions once I have a good look-see.

              I made a set of 2 degree shims for Wabit a while ago. Not sure if he sold them or not. The were in the for sale section... I wouldn't run them on a daily car. You'll chew rear tyres like bubblegum!

                hmmm very interested in the camber race plates but i have a question. installing these and removing the top bearing rubber bush will causes a hell of a lot of load onto the shock towers and lead to cracking no? Rear camber plates can go on both disc and drum rear ends. I'm using them on both at the moment.

                  here is my approach to rear end camber, welded on plates as apposed to , spacers,so as not to stretch or stress the bolts

                    Hmmm..cheers for the pics alex. If only I had welding skills. Should be able to get a welding mate to fix it if its the route I take.

                    But surely 2deg wont chew through wheels given the complete lack of weight at the back? Anyone have first hand experience with large camber and chewing through the tires?

                      i got the 2deg ones made up, you can have them for what i paid $50, only reason why i didnt put them on my daily was because some of the vwvortex guys used to chew through tyres every 5,000 miles.....

                        Yikes. Cheers Dom for the response. I find it amazing that they will chew through tyres given only 2deg.

                        I've had 2deg on the front of my starlet GT previously and hardly noticed a difference, but I guess the rears on the golf dont do any turning.

                        Dom, I'll get back to you if we go this route, but its prolly unlikely. Might have to do more guard lipping (i.e. paint chipping)

                            I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think the ones preeny made for Dom were 2 degree plate's

                            So if you add that to the your already standard -1 degree+ you end up with a tad over -3 degrees camber..

                            hence why the rear tyres don't last all that long!

                              what about front's. can you just get different bolts for up front to increase the camber? not keen on modifying the strut tops.
