anyone using a bigger cam than the g-grind?

as the title asks..... what experience have any of us had with more adventurous camshafts? i'm pretty much set to buy a more race oriented cam for the RV in my mk1 for hillclimbing since i can now pillage the short AUG trans from my missus cabby and swap out the nice long geared CHD to her diesel. The AUG might even stop me from speeding so much too

however, like i have said, i think with the dellorto and electronic ignition, and the exhaust, it would sing with a tad more lift and a little more duration so just wondering if anyone can give me a testimonial... theres a lot of 8V hydro cams to choose from

AT US$130 it's pretty good value for money.

Now I'm running a mystery cam with huge duration

I find them both OK on the street but then I'm happy with urethane engine mounts all 'round too.

Pete, i think i know what you mean.... i have to drive my car with a feathertouch on the brakes and throttle already (carb opens up real fast, as you know) but at the moment i still have normal mounts on the geabox and front radiator support stabiliser, so its a bit softer (have the poly inserts in the other mounts)

i'm not overly concerned how easy it will be on the street - my main concern is losing driveability from 2-3k.... i want to avoid changing into first on the move

anyway, I was thinking about trying out the TT 276 cam... sort of middle of the road...

If you plan on fitting a cam to a stock hydro head & stock 1.8L, you'd be hard pressed to go past the TT276.

It's the largest hydro cam you can fit without having to clearance the lifter bores @ .499" lift I think from memory.

It works awesome & come's on nice & strong from 4000rpm. Alittle bit of a pain in traffic, but you can live with it. ( sort of!)

Also, one more thing about your AUG gearbox.

The ratio's are terrible for an NA engine. I currently run one in my car & the 2nd gear ratio is too far away from 1st. You have to rev the arse out of it & by the time you get it into 2nd its dropped out of the power curve & bogs down.

I stand by my TT276 on a stock engine & the stock mk1 diesel 4spd gearbox. These have a close 1st & 2nd & 3rd is spread out & 3rd & 4th are close together. With that cam & the right tune the engine should push close to 200km/h at 6800+rpm in top. Mine did NA!

If you feel like doing some work to the engine like increased comp., intake, exhaust & port clean up etc, I'd go a more aggressive cam to the TT288.

My two cent's.

The AUG is a crappy gearbox. Check the ratio's.

I think it has a 1.94 2nd gear instead of the close ratio 2.12 2nd gear.

I've got one & hate it. It only became a nice box, once I fitted the turbo, as you take off in 1st, turn the tyres & grab 2nd & it will still hold enough boost to light the tyres until it hits 80km/h. Which is about a 50-60+m powerskid.

ahh thanks golfworx. driving the AUG in the cabby (with 1.5D pulling it) you certainly notice the gap between 1st and 2nd, but it feels like the rest of the gears are close. At the moment i have the CHD on the mk1 and although the gears feel spaced nicely, they are so long. i am sure top speed would be well over 200km/h if it would pull it there.

the 276 looks like a goer then, should be fun to play with

Just my observations.

If you planned on some engine work, I'd look into the TT288, but for a bolt in cam, I'm sure you will be pretty happy with it.

The blokes who went for a ride in my banger TT276 engine in the 76er always had a giggle went it came on! haha.

Plus it has a nice crankyness about it. I would have liked more, but it was my everydayer too!

276TT cam Tim had was defiantly a hoot. cam on reasonably strong and pulled hard! Defiantly would recommend it. Like Tim said, I'd only go bigger if you had some head work done
