  • Steering Rack end help?

Is it possible to change the drivers side rack end with the rack still in the car? I had a crack at it this afternoon but couldn't undo the part inside the boot if that make sense. Just doesn't seem to be enough room to swing a spanner.

there isnt enough room to swing a spanner, but you can do it anyway. welcometo the world of mk1 service.

a couple of tips for this particular job:

    1) slide the boot right out of the way towards the end of the tie rod
    2) i have 2 modified shifters i use for this particular job - one is an 8" that i have ground the inside of the jaws so it will actually fit over the lock nut, and the other shifter (also an 8") i cut half of the handle off to make it nice and short. this means you can get it in there more easily.

a couple of modified shifters work for several "VW special tool" applications.... and you only need to buy really cheap ones

      Home made special tools FTW!!

i got a few cut down spanners, also a 13mm spanner thats curved to a near 90 degree angle. Was very handy to remove gemini carbies

I managed to do it somehow with just a 15" shifter.

yeah ok i'll try cutting down a shifter. it's only really a problem becasue there is only 2 flat sides on the "nut" so i give it half a turn and then i cant get the shifter on to even attempt another turn. i'll revisit it tomorrow with a cheap shifter and see if cutting it down helps.

          thanks for the tips gldgti

oh - once the lock nut is cracked and backed off about 1/4 turn you should be able to do the rest with your hands.....

got it done this afternoon didn't end up cutting any tools to get it undone. was hard to do up though, was hard to tell if it's going to be tight enough....
                no more wobble though
