They did.. The 1.8 was released in 1980 but the 1.6 was still sold along side the 1.8.

        In what country?

The UK had the 1800 replace the 1600 in 82 and they ceased production in 83.

Ah sorry, getting confused. its the plastic bumpers and big dash that came out in 1980 and not the 1.8

            And another...

Started off life as a 1.6 1981 GTi, mate of mine put a 1.8 lump in it and did all manner of mods (including cutting the roof out and replacing it with a sunroof-laden Audi 80 panel) before shipping it out here from the UK in about 2004.

Now languishing in my garage waiting for me to find time to start on the not-very-long list of stuff that needs fixing before I can put her in for a roadworthy...

            http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs172.snc3

I'm also going to scan in the library of images he's lent me when I get the chances - there's one picture of it from 20 years ago in original state.

              83/84 1.8 black Campaign

Surprised that I haven't posted to this thread before, but there you go....

              Had it four years now

Not excatly stock - Bilstein suspension + 270mm disks up front, and MkII GTI disks at the back (courtesy of Static )

              Otherwise original.
Not entirely sure that it is a Campaign - has most of the features, but the chassis number might be fraction early.
From what I've worked out the conditions for baing a Campaigne are a little vaque anyway.

BTW, this is a better shot of the Dunlops before I err, scuffed them a little at Oran Park late last year....

What do you think of the wheels?
              (15 x 6)

              Ian.

Oh.......it's you. We spoke briefly at Oran park. There was also the 16VT there that day as well.

I was thinking wth did this black gti come from - had never seen it before : ).

It looked tidy on the track.

                William.

                  This car look's very familiar.

Has it been registered on the road before?

I can remember seeing a blue body kitted mk1 3dr that looked almost identical to this cruising on the Prince Fwy heading to & from Geelong from Melb I'd say.

It had different wheels though. They looked alot bigger

                  Was awhile ago now.

think it has been on those wheels all the time. the last time it was on the road was about 2 years ago, so entirely possible...

could be the lack of light on the wheels, they are on fairly low profile tyres. here's some more shots from the day she arrived:

wow where did you get this one from? it was sitting up in bondi for yonks on the st.

I think it's a tad darker blue in person.

Reckon it must be a same same but different one. This one's been owned by my mate and Melbourne-based the whole time it's been down here. I'll double check with him as he's a pom too and we all do some time in Bondi lol...

Edit: Quoth the previous owner "It's well travelled but never Bondi"

We had a chat in the pits? That was good

Yeah the 16V is Arno's. Indecently quick...

This was only the second supersprint for my black GTi - I've done truck-loads of motorkana's in it - I guess you wouldn't have seen it if you only go to supersprints.

It's easy to look tidy when you're driving on tyres as good as the Dunlop DZ03 I was using. Boy do they stick
Did manage to unstick them over the back, breaking too late into a hairpin, and had a half-spin. That wasn't tidy
Nor were the evasive actions of the guys who came along afterwards, finding me sitting smack in the middle of the road...

                          Oh for a 16V

I have an 88 Cabriolet GTI. Uk Import.

Its been sat in a garage for 10 years, so it was a bit of a barn find.

                                Hi guys
this is my 1982 Mk1 Golf Gti. Don't pay any attention to the number plates. It was sold to me from country Victoria as an '81 Gti so I ordered plates before it arrived. I have since learned it's an '82 by the VIN number. Hope you like.
