  • brake lights not working on 81 gld

the scenario: brake lights are not working, globes are fine, fuse is fine so my guess is it is the brake light switch. there is no switch behind the pedal, i have been told this is located on the master cylinder???? not sure which plug it is or even if i am looking at the right thing. there is a plug on top, the side and something that is not even connected to anything. i have attached photos so u can see what i am looking at. please help!

photo shows one on side and one on top

    photo shows one going nowhere

    hey mate,

its definately the switch, and a common problem at that. i would suggest getting hold of a manula with wiring diagrams and use the colour codes to figure which switch is which. however, replace both, as its not much money to do so.

i have seen setups with 3 connectors and setups with 2 connectos, and i am only familiar with the 2 connector setup - however you will be able to find out what you need simply by using a jumper wire to short both connectors one at a time and see which one turns the brake lights on

    HTH!

PS - ring HSY autoparts for those sensors, thats where i got them last time. in sydney, 8339 8339

if you mean that connector doing nothing under the washer bottle, its there on just about every mk1.... i think some car's had some other connector on the gb for something or other, but most didnt.

            nothing to worry about.

its a mk1 diesel mate, and if there ws a section that was brake specific i would have posted this thread there... but thanks for the creative input

Would you have been happier if he had pointed out that there is a specific Mk 1 section ?

                  Hi Lawny,
just replaced these switches on my '77.
                  Brake lights had stopped working.

I got them from Unique Imported Parts in Dandedong-$16 ea.
