I had this problem, so I took it to a mechanic to loosen, tightened it by hand, and came home to continue working on it.

What you need is a big enough bar. In the past I have done them with a 2 foot bar.

The real hard ones though, Mr 3/4 socket set comes to the party. Then they yield easy.

WD40 won't go anywhere, heat might. Depending on why you want it off. The bearing has to be a consideration. A hot air gun would be pretty safe, blow torch not so.

The only other method I have ever used is the one with a long bar end, but this failed me (the pipe extension not the bar on the socket) for the first time on the MK1 as well. Anyone else have a tip?

Strong T Bar, not a supercheep one and a length of exhaust pipe.

i used a cheap tool today, i have a kingchrome set too but didn't want to wreck it. sounds like it's a matter of finding a strong enough tool for the job. thought there might have been a trick to it that i was missing. swearing at it wasn't working

as loon says a good quality T bar is the go. You would have to try really hard to break it if its decent.

Get a Shentai electric impact wrench. I have used mine successfully on my Jackaroo pinion nut, exhaust flange nuts and Troopy spare wheel nuts that had been unused for so long they'd rusted on. The Troopy owner laughed at the little green thing, until it undid the nuts with consummate ease. (I should have left him stranded, but I can be nice sometimes,,,,,)

Good for about 350nm of torque, delivered with a hammer action rather than gentle levering as with a long wrench.

Haha, yep. But Shentai winds up and "fires" about 4 times a minute, whereas the TDI does it a bit more often

agree with the idea of an impact gun with some impact sockets as normal sockets will shatter. Some things can be done with cheap and cheerful stuff, but big items like hub nuts, allen keys and head bolts the stronger and better they are, the easier the job is.
