    I notice the cover on my GTI is different to the ones I remember - it wraps around the bottom of the crank pulley. It looks like you need to pull the crank pully off to get the cover off - don't look look like a step forward to me
    The old one you could get off easily...
    Is it made of plastic? You only need to get the top half off to check the belt, 2 clips should do that. Bottom wheel only comes off for belt changes.

    There are 2 kinds of metal ones early that go right to the bottom and are a bugger to undoo and the later ones which are shorter and come off easy.

      You're right of course - yes: two part, and plastic
      Still used to the old one piece metal ones...
