Having a -bit- of a problem with the motor...

Hoping you guys could diagnose wtf is going on my motor.

Not long after i bought it, on mornings the car would feel a bit rough, stuttering and not liking large throttle openings, i just put this down to it being cold, warmed up and a few revs it was fine.

Then a few days ago the problem didn't disappear, it just got a lot worse, the car would be idling ridiculously rough, wouldn't like any throttle under load, black smoke under throttle and a few unhealthy pops from the exhaust. I've traced it to the plugs being fouled, I'll clean them, stick em back in and start it up, and after about 5 sec of good idle, it goes to **** again and the plugs are jet black.

This is my first carby car, I'm at a bit of a loss, my guess would be it's running ridiculously rich, but why it would of been an intermittent problem in the past i dont know. You guys have any ideas?

Sounds like its running rich. I had the same problem, but only in cylinder 3. All I did to fix it was buy a hotter plug and it worked a treat.
I think I bought a W10 plug where as standard is W7.
Im sure someone else will have a better answer in no time... keep an eye on here mate and dont stress!

Auto choke?

Which carby is it? It sounds like your choke is sticking on.

Which engine is it?

A few more details on the car would help the diagnosis. Black plugs sounds like a really rich mixture. Make sure the choke is going off. I wouldn't expect to need much choke to get a car started in Australia TBH.

ADR 27A motors had the two idle jet system which could be faulty.

i had the same prob, ur running too rich. I got the carby rebuilt and its fine now. Try and get the carby re tuned U may want to also check your points and condensor as well

Sorry guys, it's a '79 model, 1600, but from what i'm told it is a later model carb as the fuel return line is blocked off? Thanks for the answers guys, it's pointing me in the right direction.

make sure your timing is ok aswell, doesnt hurt to check...

blocked return line is a worry...

Reinstate the return line, but put a reducer in it so that it doesnt return too much fuel. This may solve, or help your overfuelling problem.
