6-8deg BTDC with hoses disconnected and plugged. Its almost definately way too advanced since most guys will not know the setting and just tune it until it idles nice, which is always way too advanced

Stupiud question, but can too much "advance" cause a blown headgasket?

Not stupid mate, It certainly can, if it is pinging heavily it normally blows them inbetween the piston bores.

                Cheers mate,
Just wondering cause i sent me rolla in for a tune a few weeks back, timing was set 10BTDC and normal is 8BTDC.

It didnt ping or anything, but it Blew a HG with in 4 hours of driving it
And judging by the spark plugs the mixture was spot on. hrmm, owell .

2 degrees will make not much difference.... but 10-15 will

I got sick of waiting for the garage to sort it, so I just drove and adjusted, drove and adjusted until it stopped pinging. Goes as it did before now and no pinging.

I will put a strobe on it next week, but at least it is driveable.
