Well despite getting it home and the lads giving it a good clean before I started on the trim it was too dark for pics.

The family I bought it off had four (all GLD runners although this and yellow one now sold) and it they had been looked after.

Had to laugh they bought some of them for the kids to drive to the bus stop and I mean young kids lol. The place was well off the beaten track. Great country folk!

    Pictures as I found it.

Driving back it was clear the brakes needed a bleed as they barely worked but I'm amazed at the n/a power. Sure it isn't quite as brisk as a 1600 petrol but it isn't miles off.

Neither is it low geared like many diesels I've driven so the 4 spd will happily sit on 110 without being deafening. Fuel economy is mental - drove 150kms home and used under 1/4 tank and I wasn't hanging around

I'm going to run it for awhile and then sell it before we move house in the new year.

E30 wagon is a mates you don't find many of them in the country lol.

Tidy looking machine there. Looks a lot like another on here recently bought by a guy in Victoria. There's something quintessentially golf about a GLD. And four in the one place...

Did you have a choice of three?

Oh, and MK1 brakes barely work at the best of times

Cheers guys. I did have a choice of the three lined up although they always wanted to keep two.

White one had a head gasket on the way out and the yellow one had been kicked in at some point by vandals although was in good nick otherwise.

Steve I know mk1 brakes are bad but the pedal goes to the floor sooooo bad. Sorting that out wednesday morning before organising a mk1 photo shoot.

                I can get a

                Green
                Blue
                White
                Red

Not sure about silver, black or mustard but I'll try. Am I missing any colours?

Some gold/yellow work copy's would set it off a treat and give it the Aussie look

Looks like a pretty clean mk1 Robin, nice find. Funny that they used them to drive to the bus stop which I assume was at the end of their driveway.

I've got a couple stored away currently waiting till the end of the year then I can have some fun.

Brakes sure after different to a mk4.

Those brakes sound like my old beetle when I first bought it - pedal all the way to the floor and barely stopped. Any other major issues?

                        Might see you Wed night.

No other issues this is by far the most sorted mk1 I've owned (four to date inc this). The front dampers could probably do with replacing but it handles fine. The radio doesn't work which pissed me off

those gld's are built so tough, my folks had one(from new) and a mk2 gti , at the time i learnt to drive. when they sold the mk2 and mk'3'd it i scored the mk1, the peanut wagen(i coined it).
to cut a long story short i didnt put water or oil into that car for around 3 years and it never stopped, fond memory's

It seems the GLD is still alive & well, & I thought they had nearly all dried up. I owned a Kermit green car like the photo. I bought it at around 32,000km from an old guy who had bought it new, to last in his retirement years. Unfortunately he suffered a stroke & lost his hearing. Because he could no longer hear the revs & know when to change gears he traded it in on an auto. something.
Many years later this car won the watercooled class at the day of the VW, much to the disgust of an Audi owner. He got quite angry that his car didn't win & started challenging the judges. I took my trophy, collected my family & cleared off.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.
