  • Engine removal

despite being able to r&r aircooled motors with my eyes closed, I've never removed a VAG watercooled motor.

Question: do you need to remove g'box as well, if just doing an engine swap??
and if so, where the best place in inner Melbourne to buy cv joint spline tools

Yup, take the box out with it.
Id undoo the gearbox mount, whilst holding it with a jack or crane, then the rear and front mounts, then the timing belt one when it is canted down at an angle.
Drop it out through the bottom.
Reverse order to put back in.
You will need M8 Spline tool for the driveshafts.

Yep, I've seen the M8 spline bits at All Tools .

As Matt says it's easiest to remove and replace motor and box together.

Motor and box can come out either up or down just depends on what lifting kit you've got handy. Where you seperate the exhaust might determine whether you go up or down.
