    Are they sticked too?
    (that's the other obvious place....)

      The plan is to paint it white with the "Golf" logo down the side.




      The flares will come after I think I can keep it out of the trees for extended periods of time.

      Engine-wise I will be sticking with a 1600 8v on webers (twin 40s). Lots of reasons for this;
      P2 class capacity (if I went to 1800, I would be up against the 1800 - 2000cc P3 cars)
      Injection would have to be of the original type (K jet) - too much like hard work
      Webers sound good!
      The engine (head & block) needs to have been either sold here or homologated by VW with the FAI (That is how Matthias can run a 16v head on his green machine)

        Rally guys have many creative ways of destroying perfectly satisfactory motor cars

        I absolutely agree that twin 40's on a 1600 work very well.
        I ran just that set up in the past - was more than a match for 1770 Lancers in a straight drag, and gave (warm) 2L Escorts a serious run for their money
        And oh yeah they sound good all right, epecially with a nice hot cam...
        Go for it.

        BTW, Let me know if you could use some nice meaty aluminium front and rear suspension/sump guards for a MkI - I've got a pair kicking around the garage that came off the other car...

          Looking awesome, Charles. Give me a call sometime. Rumour has it, you now own the old yellow I stripped and rebuilt (on a budget). I saw it the other day. Glad to see it still going strong.

                    Good to see the beast is coming along nicely. What is this about being able to run a 16v? if thats the case i could re log book my car as a twin cam.

                    I am now up against a 200hp escort, a 2005 honda integra and a few 2L pulsar gti's, so far the 1800 with a cam can beat em. In WA the 1600s are faster than the 2Ls, and with an 1800 you run in P3 but at 1600 weight.

                    I like the ali floor, very nice idea, but im a bit concerned with the front of the cage, as far as i am aware there is no problem with meeting the towers, as all the current ARC cars do. Do you have a pic of the front? have any horizontal bars across the front of the car? good to see a bit of reenforcement between the A arms, try and run a bar across with ur sump guard, the bottom moves big time!

                    I love the side draugh webbers, the guy i bought my car off had a lot of problem with em and went to engine management, but a lot of guys here run them.

                    Also i dont think you are allowed to run the flares, i cant because mine is log booked as a Golf, not a Golf GTi (also why i cant run the flat head)

                      Awesome build Charles keep us updated with pics. As someone else mentioned its great to see a great core of people on the forum into using their cars as they were intended In rallies both tarmac and gravel.

                      Looking forward to seeing more pictures as the build progresses.

                        Thanks for all the positive vibes guys! I was wrong about the rollcage and the front towers, looking at the CAMS manual pickies I could have gone thru the firewall and picked them up. Oh well.
                        It seems that there are many schools of thought on cages and their designs, all you can do is trust the builder and learn through your own experience (Please note I am NOT planning on destruction testing my baby!!)

                        VW did homologate a 1600 with 16v in 1980(i think) no idea about the 1800, but the FIA list all the variations that VW submitted so it might be worth investigating.

                        The flares are fine IF run as a classic and not PRC car. So I would not be able to run them at events where there was no provision for classics. Sooooo we are looking at a two sets of front guards (one with and one without flares) and bolt-on rear flares. This will also let me come to terms with driving the thing without fear of leaving a trail of shattered fibre-glass behind me.

                        I might try to log-book mine as a GTI (even though it has a standard head etc), see how The Powers That Be like it.

                        And now, back to the painting....

                            The engine bay WAS shiny, but it needed a coat of etch-primer before the white-cote goes on


                            And a little spot POR to seal the recently welded bits

                                Haven't seen a MkI floorpan quite so tidy (and shiny) in awhile.
                                Looks good - its almost a pity that you going to take it and get it all grubby playing in the forest...
                                Not to mention all the rocks and stuff banging away on the floorpan...
