    oh , apart from the linkage crap, which is easy to do if you find a mate who can weld.

      That fifth gear is must have if you do highway cruising at all - The GTI is actually reasonably relaxed at 110 in fifth..
      More comfortable than than around town, come to think of it
      It pains me to think of all those kays I did with four speed box over the years

      Interesting Phill's comment about reverse - I have a feeling that it's reverse that plays up first when there an adjustment issue. One of these days I have to have another fiddle with my linkage - it keeps popping out...

        The 5 speed gearstick plate allows about 2mm more adjustment for reverse.

          Made from unobtanium in Australia these days, just grind down the 4 speed one for the same result.

            You must be dealing with one lazy dealer.

              No dealers care about Mk1 parts these days.

                I'm sure their managers would like to hear about that.
                We need to find a dealer in Sydney that will order parts.

                You can get genuine through;

                GTI Imports
                Muller & Muller
                Volksbahn

                They have dealer contacts that will order stuff.
                If you can get it in Germany, you can get it here.

                (I think the people on this forum have a mental health problem with genuine parts!)
