  • under carpet foam.

    Hey all,

Since pulling up all my carpet, I am happy that there is no rust so I just want to put it back. The issue however is that I threw out the foam underlay as it stunk and was full of peices of glass. What do you guys use to put under there?

    Cheers

Have a look around for a motor trimmer and see if they can sell some underlay. If you have the $$$ get the whole lot done.

I used All Car Interiors at Windsor to have the outer roof replaced and they seemed pretty switched on.

                thanks mate, good idea.

I don't care too much about the sound deadening aspect, I just hate having carpet on metal as the carpet does not fit then. Who has got there carpet professionally cleaned or done it themselves?

at bunnings you can buy a 8x2m roll of foam waste carpet underlay with a plastic silver backing. 2 layers of this (glued with some contact adhesive) does a great job at padding out the carpet so it fits well and has reasonable deadening properties (for road noise etc - not much good for exhaust and stuff).

at about $80 bucks its cheaper than anything the foam shop sells and will do the job for you. and, even if you go way overboard with it, you'll still have enough to do 3 mk1's!

just a word of warning about sourcing backyard solutions or adlibbing with what you have (eg: newspapers etc.) Remember that most of the materials used in a car (even as old as the first Mk1's) may be fire resistant or have fire prevention properties.

I would suggest avoiding any material you feel might increase the likelihood of fire spreading inside the cabin. Yes there is fuel and/or oil and/or sparks in the engine bay and/or under the back seat, but these are exterior to the cabin. Newspaper is side the cabin as underlay might not be too fire resistant.
