Raining and raining, I was bore yesterday, so I tried to tidy up some wiring in the engine bay. The horn in my mk1 is triggered by a relay output, i.e. typical setup to feed the horn signal wire to relay 86 and get battery power to the horn via relay 87. I didn't think the relay is necessary so I bypassed it, plug it back to the original connection and the horn doesn't work, obviously the original circuit does not provide enough voltage to fire the horn. Do you Mk1 guys has the similar problem ?

was this when the car was off?
afaik, my car is all original electrically. My horn doesn't sound when the car is off, and when the car is on, well, it's a mk 1 horn. sounds like a badger giving birth. just quieter.

Correct, when ignition was off nothing sound, that's how Mk1 horn work.
When ignition is ON, nothing sound if I connect the horn wires without relay.
With the relay it not only works but also very loudsigpicParts for sale http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...ff-102387.html

I just went and whack the key in and turned it to the ON position, and the horn sounded.

I have 2 horns, so I believe they require more power to fire it upsigpicParts for sale http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...ff-102387.html
