  • auto to manual conversion

    Hey all,

I keep thinking I should convert the mk1 to manual to go with the new engine and so on. Does anyone know how much is involved to go from auto > manual?

I am only wanting a 4sp (apparently the diesel 4sp from the mk1 GLD is pretty strong and can withstand a lot of abuse?) as I like the idea of old school things in my golf, 5sp came along later than my year model.

From what I can gather, I need a gearbox, clutch, flywheel, clutch pedal and gear stick to make this work. Is there anything else I am forgetting?

    Please forgive my noob knowledge.

    Cheers

    Cameron

You might need the steering rack as the shifter linkage mounts off it.

I think Golf Loon (Matt) might have done one of these.

    Also need

    Clutch cable
    pressure plate
bolts for pressure plate and flywheel.
rear g'box mount(I'm not sure if the auto one is the same)
    linkages
    shift rod
    Shifter housing

Doesn't seem too hard though just thinking about it.

will need the steering column as the auto one doesnt have the pivot for the clutch pedal. Accelereator cable will need changing also. The rack also as Pete said..

Took me about 3 weeks of evenings, but i swapped complete dash and electrics from my bent rocco.

Best to have a donor car nearby if you have not yet got one.

Actual engine trans swap was done in 2 evenings from memory, but we had prettywell everything ready to go.

LMK if you need any pics,

      cheers,
      Grant.

        Thanks guys, big help

Sounds like a lot of work but will be worth it in the end.

What do you think about the diesel 4sp? myth or?

Diesel box has the same code as the petrol one, most are "GC"

I'm not sure why a diesel one would be stronger although it would probably have had a gentler life.

The 5 speed diesel boxes are a different matter though.

Thanks Pete, did the 5sp diesel box come out in GLD's or was that a 4sp?

I think it will be easier to buy a parts car for this endeavour.

Diesel 5 Speeds are rare here, they came in the MK3 Diesels.(and possibly MK2 - I'm not sure)

All the Aussie GLDs got GC coded 4 speeds.

Yeah, but with a 4.24 Ring and Pinion making them even lower geared than the 4 speed Good box for a short track car though.

look on ebay or tradingpost cam, i was eyeing off a nice 4-door in bris that would suit very well
here are the links for both

                        and

(the tradingpost one is WAY too expensive for it's condition imo)

i'll be keen to see how you go with this as i've got a manual GLD and an auto GLS, it'd be nice to swap em over.
