  • my crapy 1978 mk1 GLD

A place for our new members to introduce themselves and their ride. Your first post MUST be in this section.

^^^^started thread in newbies. thought i might graduate to the mk1 section

basically i've landed my self a cheap mk1 that needs alot of tlc. i've never tackled body work like this before so bare with me. and excuse my lack of skill and knowledge. i may ask some stupid questions, but thats learning!

pics are in the other thread....

    here's one

    photoshop + boredom =

this was the selling point though

    that's a mad pchop.

I'd love to leave that paint work just as is, and run it low and slow, that'd be heaps cool!

Don't worry about asking silly questions, we all do at one stage, and well, have to learn somehow.

My only tip at this time is use a high quality rust converter and apply that properly. I didn't and after a few months, my new paint is not exactly pristine any more.

Looking forward to your build up!

i'll get a pick of the bonnet and roof tomorrow and tell me if i should still keep it rat! there's a large section of rust in the A pillar that needs to be fixed if it's ever going to get back on the road. i freakin love the bucket!
this is going to be ratty but i still need to fix a few things up.

i'm putting a call in to neale wheels tomorrow to look into getting these rims widened. i'm thinking powder coated white or the colour in the pics.... see how much it's going to cost first

I hate rat look!! Used to be a "cal" look in beetles years ago and it killed a lot of cars back then.
Good luck with whatever you decide mate, Cheers,

$85 per rim just to pull them apart. + the cost of the new rim

just putting the car up on axle stands and wanted to make sure i'm putting them in the right spot before i continue....

the fronts seem pretty obvious, but there's a few points at the rear that look like they'd be ok.. just dont want to hurt anything in the process.

also i noticed there's been a pretty hard knock under the passenger door, just where the manual says to place the standard jack, my concern there is if it's going for a blue slip are they going to give me a hard time on that.... pics i hear you say.... ok

                          stupid flash dont work!

                          but here you go.
