Mk1 Engine Mounts

Hey i dont know if this forum has already been created but anyway, do any of you guys know of a good engine mount to run that would be stronger than the standard, I have swaped my engine mount for a new one (standard part) and It broke aswell. The engine mount is located on the drivers side.

Are you talking about the rubber guts of the mount or the steel that it sits in?

I had a 2 litre big valve MK1 years ago and only uprated the rear gearbox mounting and the front snubber. I had no troubles with the side mounts. This is where all the movement happens. If they are slack, then the side mounts get twisted continuously which doesnt do them any good.

There is a right and wrong way round to insert the side mounts if you take them out.

This is the kind of thing to find in the States I reckon. Possibly there is an uprated rubber one.

There are different sized mounts. Standard 1.6, GTI or Diesel.
Diesel will probably be the easiest to get hold of in Tassie. You need the whole bigger bracket, not just the bigger insert.

you can get a poly insert that fills up the cavities in the rubber ones, and yes you should go for the later larger style mount, but also check your other mounts as excess movment will wear them out quicker than normal

Make sure that you use German mounts.

I have the bigger engine mount that came out of a diesel i think its 72mm but im not totaly sure? the mount is german made and it is the only mount that is broken on the car. When i pulled the mount out of the car the person that put the rubber mount inside the metal cassing put it in upside down and the engine was hitting the body. The new mount i orderd broke when we were inserting it and i was wondering if there was something stronger i could use but the prothane website looks like a good option http://www.prothane.com/pages/productguide.html

on the topic of those prophane mounts ive heard they are really good i heard that hey are noisy for 5000 ks then get quietter im looking into getting some for the beeza bc the strut mount need doin and the engine mount also needs doing

I've only replaced my mount's twice. Once with standard replacement aftermarket brand ones & they sagged & **** themselves in one day & I properly installed them too.
Then I replaced them with genuine VW mount's & have never had a problem since.

My recommendation, use OEM diesel mount's. The diesel engine side mount can be alittle tricky to insert too without damaging the housing but it can be done with some patience.

Is the off centered hole in the engine mount rubber apposed to be pointing upwards or downwards. (this is the driver side mount im talking about)

Likewise - I've rarely had any problems with the standard mounts, as long as you insert them the right way up
They stand up to quite alot of harsh treatment without many problems. As suggested by others, make sure that the front and rear mounts are ok.
The front one particularly is often a worry - use a poly one, or do what I do - put big flat washers behind the mounting plate so that there is no movement. Using a diesel rear mount is apparently good, though I've never worried about it.
