  • A Shove in the Right Direction Please?

Just bought this off ebay and drove it through the night back from Bendigo to Newcastle.

    Hardcore sound system...LOL

I bought it for my daughter to learn to drive in. The dash is really cracked (aren't they all?) so what I am looking for is a dashmat and an interior light. Just cosmetic things I know but the rest of the car is pretty tidy. Drove well, a bit of a grating/rattling noise when doing about 50k's and it goes away when you keep accelerating, then comes back at 80 k's then goes away when you keep accelerating then comes back at 100 k's but goes away if you go faster!! LOL ... so I did 90 most of the way back. Got fuel economy of about 400k's to a tank so thats not too bad.

So if anyone can tell me where I might be able to buy those things, I would be really grateful.

Oh, I forgot to say.. the airconditioning unit is a bit loose on the left hand side. Any ideas on how they should be secured? this one looks like it just sits there.

      Good purchase! Very nice.

The interior light is the same as a beetle.

If the air con unit doesn't work.. I'd suggest just getting a mechanic to pull all that crap out.

You'll be bloody hard pressed to get a dash that isn't cracked, so don't fret about that. Not sure where to buy a dash mat.

The rattles are due to harmonics in the car. That's just something you'll have to pin point and fix over time.

Great first car purchase by the way!

The aircon does work perfectly. The guy I bought it from spent big dollars getting it fixed - it is ugly though

          Hahaha alright then, lucky you!

They just have fairly simple brackets securing them to the dash and then they are screwed to the floor. I'd say some of the screws have just fallen out.

            congrats on the purchase!

I would have loved to have bought it if i had the spare cash. it looks really clean and tidy, I cetainly hope you're happy with it! Love the old school AC too!

your daughter is a lucky girl!

There should be someone on here who has a spare dash mat, and an int light shouldn't be too hard to track down.

Thanks Jarred, at least you would have had less of a drive to get it home!

Are the interior lights the same as bay window kombis?

Oh good. Then I know where I can get that. Just the dash mat now.

... Might want to check it fits first though. I'm a bit sketchy on that.

Those early dashes make baby jeezus cry, think matt (loon) has a blue nicer cabriolet one to match your carpets.

Nice mk1 - hope she doesn't bend it most learners are doing just that

I am a bit of a stickler for keeping things original if I can. If I was able to change the dash, I would want it to be the exact same shape.
The odo says 136000ks.... although I am not sure if thats correct. It has a service history with a major service done in 1990 at 115000ks. Then there are receipts done for work over the last few years with 2 of those receipts a month apart last year with 144000k's on them not too sure if they are just wrong or if someone got a bit happy with a drill....

It had rust work and a spray in 2003. I see there are some very small spots under the windscreen that will need looking at eventually. The doorcards are perfect, the roof lining is perfect too. The seats are ok but the velour has worn.

Thanks. I will get the mechanic to check it out.

jack the front end up, grab the tyres outer lip with two hands one at the top of the tyre and one at the bottom then side to side wiggle to check for play at both points. wheel bearing replacement isnt uncommon for a vehicle of this age it looks mint condition good buy.
