  • Top three upgrades for a stock Mk1?

As someone new to Golfs, I'm wondering what are the most important performance upgrades you can make to a stock Mk1?

At present my list would go:

    1) Suspension
    2) Brakes
    3) Tyres

Suspension (coilovers + braces), Brakes and new wheel/tyre combo.

Maybe some polyurethane bushes throughout the car too?

Thought Dom would suggest a crowbar?

              1. Brakes would be first!!! standards are so bad.
              2. front and rear sway bars.
              3. Set of wheels and tires.

Easy brake upgrade is a set of GTI fronts, larger vented rotors for good stopping power.
                76 MkI 3 door - daily drive/project - 1.8 5speed
                76 MkI 3 door swallowtail - 16v track car
76 MkI 3 door "long term" project

                    Dohhhh!

I been reading Peter Jones' thread about brakes. GTi def sounds like a good starting point.

My first upgrade was one of those wooden-bead taxi driver style seat covers (rad).

It should obviously go a lot faster once I paint the whole thing matte black

I like those beaded seat covers, they look rather comfortable.

Providing everything is in standard & working order.

                        brakes.
                        carb.
                        good tyres.

then suspension, but that would be no. 4

Pretty sure Golf Loon has a few sets available, they are a nice upgrade to do as it's all mk1 gear so it's easy to do. That or you can put on later mk1 cabby gear which i believe is the same and there is a lot more of.
