If its the earlier style dash you can easily get your hand up there and twist the 2 globe holders to remove them. I don't think they make led globes for them though. They are the ones with the wire attached to the holders

do u pull out the speedo and tacho cluster to do that?

arrrrhaaaaa! i did like to do it as well, but ain't Mk1, can't you just buy the led bulb and solder em' up?? of coz not dodgy jobs i mean... tape em up
Think I saw an LED "how-to" on The Vortex. The cluster was pulled out, then a mini-loom made up with 4 white leds and a regulator, I will go hunting....
PLEASE DONT just solder a LED in place of the existing globe - it will smoke! Most LEDs need a resistor (or other sort of current limiting source) to operate off 12v
Hey xxx, has your golf got the early style dash? 76-82? If it has, you don't need to pull anything. You can see up there and get your hand up there. If it is the early dash and you want to pull it out, take the radio out and there is one screw facing right that you need to remove to remove the instrument cluster. Cheers, Andrew
if u want leds go to **** smith or something like that and buy some diy is easy, all u need is some "560k ohm resistors" """I think""" and they will work on 12v without burning out, customise all the lighting.hehe
It could be the circuit true, but because it runs an actual wire to the globe holders on the earlys it is easy to rectify. Also, those globes are touchy buggers! The Hella part no. of the std globes is W121.2. 12 volt 1.2 watt
cheers, Andrew
switched my globes for blue LEDs because its easier to read and matches the colour of the car.
simple really, cost me $12. go to ****ies and get a few superbright LED's, get them to give you the correct resistors for them to run in a 12V system. i soldered them in place, 1 resistor for each led. very simple. took me 1 hour to do the job, including taking the dash out and putting it back in.
