The nuts on mine are 30mm (cost me £7 for the socket!)
If it's knocking I'm 95% sure it's the CV joint (speaking from experience). You'll also need spline tool to get the drive shaft off n all, took me 2 - 3 hours to do on the drive.

Good test for the wheel bearing is to jack it up, grab the wheel (one hand on each side) and try and wobble it. A good bearing shouldn't move..sigpic
