  • I'm driving at 0 km/hour - cable or electrical ?

Suddenly speedo died, always at 0 km. The closest speedo related issue that I can searched is here http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ghlight=speedo

Should I pull out the cable first or tracing electrical fault, don't know what happened to the cluster lately, many thing started to playing up

if you've got a few other issues (electrical} I'd check all the earth points first, before I started pulling things apart.

Unless the speedo cable has just fallen out??

As Jarred has said above the checking the earth straps are all ok is an easy starting point. My mk1 when i got it the gauges used to be very intermitent which turn out to be a missing bonnet earth strap!

The earth wont cause this problem. Got to be the cable. Easy to remove and check!!

i agree, i would think it is the speedo cable, broken or worn, i think it goes to the gearbox...

That's what I think too, will try to pull it out and check. Is there any trade secret to prevent the plastic drive gear lost inside the gear box, Andrew ?

No trade secret my friend. Just a very gentle juggle and pull out. If there is any resistance then you have a chance of losing it. By gently jiggling and a gentle pull you shouldnt have any probs. I have been working on golfs since 76 and I havent lost one yet. Patience does it. By unscrewing the nut on the cable behind the speedo you should be able to find if its broken I think.
If you can turn the inner cable or pull it out then its snapped!
I recently bought 10 new cables but they are all incorrect.
I am sure we all have secondhand ones lying around, hey!! I even have a short LHD one here now!!!

matey that was my post one my old mk1.

What I found out that happened was that i fried both the speedo's. turned out it was some kind of electrical problem. memory isnt to crash hot but im sur eit was something to do with the earth, or the fusebox to some extend.

ahh the memories of owning several mk1's hahaha

I reckon your problem was different to what I have now, you had 60km/h in your speedo when stationary and/or indicated 160 was actually 100kmph that kind of weird thing. But my speedo is dead sitting at 0/km so I suspend it's the cable issue.

Anyway I already pulled out the end from speedo but I don't have a long screw driver to reach the screw on top of gearbox will go to brunning tmr and try again.

This is contagious, I read this and now mines reading a flat '0' as well ... I think you're on the right track, cable is my first point of call.

My wiring is up the creek as well me thinks, as soon as I turn the lights on the tacho drops out!
No speedo + no tacho = driving by ear

Cable is out, when I turn the drive gear the other end doesn't move, I suppose it's broken, right ?

Now where do I get the correct cable ?

If Loon or anyone else doesnt have one up there I am sure I could find one here. Might be secondhand after the bungle by my suppliers last month though
I will be in Sydney over easter and staying at Pennant Hills if you need me to bring one up.

It depends what speedo is in your car as to which speedo you need.

                              Is it round or recatngular?
