  • Noisy Fuel Pump?

    Hi all..

Just wondering if I should be worried about my fuel pump in the audi. [yea, I know, but it's practically a mk 1]

About 2 or 3 weeks ago it started to develop a little hum [whirring noise], which has been getting louder and louder & today its been the loudest so far.

Just wondering if the pump is about to crap itself or its something simple like the mounts are getting worn & the pump is vibrating against the body.

    Any ideas anyone??

Ah yes, Audi is running Kjet-E. Thanks Pete

You should point out that your Audi runs K-Jet!

Check the pump's still bolted up under there. You might also need to check your lift pump ( if you have one) in the tank is OK.

The bearings in the pumps do eventually fail.

With mine the pump would sieze (usually mid corner uphill in the wet) a tap with a hammer would get it spinning again but in the end there was no option except to replace it.

Locally a pump is about $300 but I've seen new ones on e-bay for around the $100 mark.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't. I'm just about to head off to uni, I'll take note as I drive to be sure.

I don't think it gets louder or faster when I accelerate/go faster. [although it's hard to hear over the exhaust ]

I have a qucik jiggle of the fuel pump, seemed to move around alittle.

how firmly are they meant to be mount? solid, ie no movement?

They're on soft rubber mounts so some movement is normal. If a mount was broken the pump might have been rubbing on the body causing your noise.
