  • Ignition leads for a '90 cabriolet (JH engine)???

Right, well, I thought I was doing the right thing, bought some leads for the g/f's 1990 golf cabriolet, thought I got all the specs right, JH engine, 1.8 8 valve.... so bought some leads on ebay UK, some champion triple silicon LS-03/190. looked them up n all, they were to suit this engine. All good me thinks.

Was all to good to be true. Got them and they are a silicon boot, we have metal boots. They are about 2-4 times as long as they need to be, and the silicon boots don't fit over the spark plugs.

Now I have looked up the parts on the champion website http://www.fmecat.eu/index.asp and found that there are 2 listed sets of leads for this car, and I seem to have gotten the wrong 1's (they also list LS-205).

So. Does anybody want these leads for a small cost (they cost me about 27 pounds, so let me know what you think they are worth)

AND what leads should I get, and where from?

Can't help you much, but you are right we do have metal boots on ours.

Sounds Harsh but if it were me I would cut the silicone down so the cap fits over. You could take your old metal boot ones and have them fitted onto your news leads- Not a hard task by any means.

Agree with you GTIMk5- give HSY a look (hsy.com.au) or go to a Repco or Coventry as they might be able to source leads as well, don't know the quality though.

The joys of buying on eBay comes back to an old latin saying: "Caveat Emptor" or buyer beware.

          Good luck.

          Cheers

They are garbage. Replace em every two years, they dont make a decent connection or provide a good spark especially for kjet cars.

I have seen too many running issues attributed to or made worse by "new blue" leads from repco.

I wont use em. The ones with the metal sheath and more conductive hard centres are sooo much better.

Agree with Golf Loon on this one. The JH engine runs better with factory or OEM stuff as a rule of thumb. I did state that you can pick stuff up from Repco and Coventry to replace the HT leads, these guys also sell OEM as well and that was the intent of my original recommendation.

My old FP carby engine in my 76 2 door (god rest it's soul) was easier to run on generic stuff (fuel filters, leads, plugs etc.).

I guess those crazy Germans at VW engineered the JH and later engines to be more needy of original parts (the circle of life).

It's like everything, you get what you pay for.

If the leads that you purchased fit on to the distributor and coil then here is a tip thay you (and others) may be interested in. It was given to me by the service manager at Austral VW quite a few years ago.

Go to a motorcycle shop that sells spare parts and buy four 'long straight plug ends'. I'm not sure what they cost these days. I bought mine over 7 years ago. You cut off the existing plug ends and fit these onto the plug lead. It is very easy.

The guy who recommended them to me said that:

!. They have the correct resistance and shielding for the radio etc.
                    2. They are cheaper than the OEM VW plug end,
                    3. They will last forever and
                    4. They are waterproof.

We have had them on our Vento for around 7 years now and the car has travelled over 300,000k's in that time with no problems.
