mik - please DO NOT USE ANY SILICONE SEALANT ON YOUR CAR!

i hope thats clear. all who read this should now be informed!

silicone sealant (the clear stuff for setting glass in wood, etc) does NASTY things to car bodies. it CAUSES and accelerates corrosion.

if you are going to seal something on a steel body, use a neutral cure sealant (like sikaflex, but there are many others).

that is all.

also watch out so the brake line doesn't rust up..on my old mk1 the brake lines gave way lol while we were driving...it was so scary lol lucky nothing happend.
we replaced the lines the next day.

but i can see someone already put copper brake lines in your which is a good thing.

I recommend all the mk1 owners to have a look at your brake lines asap.

A couple of things here.

1. As has been stated before-not the first and certainly not the last Mk1 with LHS floorpan cancer.
2. It appears this was alrady identified by someone previously as the brake line looks like it was replaced.
3. Ideally get the sucker welded rather than silicone, more from a safety perspective rather than the evils of silicone (more on this sooner). In the event of a crash the silicone mounted plate may dislodge and cause some injuries to an unsuspecting front passenger. If you know someone who can weld they might be able to help-otherwise pay a few bucks with a boilermaker or ask around to find a reasonable priced smash repairer. I found a mate who did it for some cartons of beer and he did a great job.
4. Silicone. not all silicone is evil. If you use a neutral cure silicone, this will not affect your metalwork. Roof plumbers need to use silicone of metal roofs and gutters, this is what they use. I think Selleys All-Clear is neutral but again a proper job is advised unless you wish to trash the car very soon.

that sellys all clear is horrible, i recommend avoiding it unless you want to get high off of the fumes.

regular grey roofing variety is ok although if its for a car just drop the extra beans for some sika, its stronger, stickier and paintable.

So my plan of attack, considering I have 0 welding skill or equipment will be;

Find the main source of the firewall leak,
Seal that leak,
Make a plate for the hole on the floor and silicone down,
Find the penetrations that go throuugh the floor and silicone them from the outside,
Take an adult ed course in welding 101.

Car is SO noisy without any sound deadening or Carpets...

So the decision has been made to seal it up so it does not leak, with sika.

The car will be kept until the registration runs out with only required repairs between now and then.

Unfortunately I have neither the time or money to bring a car back from where this one is. May look for another MK1 or else a MK2 is my feeling.

Sad, cos I do like this car. I am sure I can find another!

I have made a considerable amount of other observations that lead to this a conclusion. There is also the fact I rear ended someone a few months back which has not been properly repaired and I spose my other consideration would be by then I will be bored with this and want another...

If I had the tools and time, I would learn how to do the repair myself, sadly with 3 kids and living in inner Sydney, it is just not practical! :ballandchain:

No Josh, read again. We didnt get GLs in Oz, we got GLS from 77 on but not GLs.
