Assistance Needed: MkI Exhaust Fumes

Ok. Is there anyway to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the cabin. I always get dizzy & smell like a car whenever I go for a drive. Problem is amplified when driving with the window(s) down. Just replaced the rubber boot seal (old one was trashed) - This has not solved the problem.

Are any of the joints blowing...particularly the flexible coupling? Exhaust manifold sealed to the downpipe? To test if the car is drawing in fumes from it's low air pressure behind the hatch put the heater blower on full to pressurise the cabin and see if this reduces them. Does the tailpipe stick right out to the extremity of the rear or is it dumping fumes under the back skirt?

Just ideas. Difficult to diagnose from afar

That Golf has had a tap in the rear. Have a good look to see if the hatch rubber is sealing properly. When you fitted the taillight supplied, did you put the rubber on?
Might have to see your friendly(?) mechanic???

Look in the raintray and at the firewall. Are there any rubber grommets missing, resulting in a big hole?

I think that may have fixed the problem. I've got few rubber grommets worn out and missing from the firewall!

No thread hi-jack intended, but I see many "worked" mk1s with the rain tray removed alltogether. Sure this gives a great smooth look (and lots more room in the engine bay) but what about the fumes entering the heater intake??

Yeah most of the cars I see with the raintray removed, also loose the heater and weld up the hole!

I left the raintray on my 16v project, as I want the car to be useable as a daily driver
