Wow, when I saw that pic of it in the bush it made me feel sad, but I am really glad you have it now and are making the effort to restore it mate. I hope it's not too far gone, It would be great to have one more GTI back on the roads.

But rest assured that if you ever want to sell I'm sure many people would take it off your hands

No don't want to sell it just yet. I'm looking forward to the resto.
From what i found so far i need a new front spoiler(didn't have one when imported), new "golf ball" for the gear stick(haven't found it in the parts box yet) and a new fuel pump, that's the excuse for the owner to strip for a rebuild in the first place.

                G'day 78GTI.

                Welcome to VWWatercooled for starter's.

I'm green with envy right now.

I would've loved to find a 78 GTI (the very collectable last of the 4spd's) in a paddock! Would go nicely with my smashed up 83 Campaign! haha

Would like to catch up sometime, as I'm down your way too or even cruise upto Melb. for a monthly meetup.

To keep people up to scratch.

The very last of the 4spd's 1600's are as valuable as the 83 Campaign's! These were also only available as LHD, as 79 was the first of the RHD & when the UK first got them.

They're were people in the UK doing RHD conversion's though, but 79 was the first of the factory RHD's!

Look forward to seeing the rebuild progress

I would love a 76/77 LHD GTI with the black metal bumpers and red tartan seats.

                  I am also very envious
