  • Electronic Ignition

I have a Crane Cams FireBall ignition unit in the garage doing very little new in box and I am wondering if I should fit it to the MK1.

What are the benefits of electronic ignition and has anyone else converted to electronic over conventional points?

i upgraded my old mk1 to electronic ignition and found the engine smoother across the whole rev range, with particular improvements at low revs and high load, and right at the end of the rev range.

I was running the scirroco ign setup on a 1.8L RV engine (from a mk2 gti).

Gave me the confidence to rev it over 6000 whenever i felt like it

    cheers.

        7000G Whacko.

I bet it's not making any power after 5000!

You'll have to have a look into the point's conversion kit, but a electronic igntion is a worthwhile upgrade.

It could also be easier just to find a late model electronic dizzy with or without Vac advance (I prefer no advance), TCI switch & loom to fit in.

It's only a couple of wires instead of stuffing around with point's conversion kit's etc.

You could try ring up a Performance shop or the Crane Dealer about the kit.

Try "Victorian Speed Pro Distributor's" on 97945177. There a Crane dealer & are pretty helpful.

        Good pricing too!

The fireball is an optical ignition and replaces the points. I have in the past used magnetic induction kits, but these are less stable and degrade with the heat.

              Hi-6! Nice kit!

You won't be dissappoint at all.

Works awesome on V8's, so 4 banger's won't be any different.

You just have to find a place to fit the digital box. They aren't small.

For everyone else, would a set up off a mk 2 GTI be worth while looking at?

Aren't the electonic with thier own little seperate box/loom?

Yep Mk2 dizzy. The same ignition module was used on Camiras which are also a good source for the wiring loom. Should be used with appropriate electronic ignition coil.

i recently fitted a scirocco GT (thanks loon) elec ign setup to my LS 1600. i bought a brand new coil ($56) from tooley imports and the part number covers untold VAG cars - T3 2.0EFI, audi's, golfs, blah blah blah... works great.

certainly a worthwhile upgrade for smoothness and i've seen improvements as mollins said at high load and high revs... though on the 1600 (Tim, i know it makes not power ANYWHERE) it'll rev off the clock well enough, again and again (im NASTY to my little 1600 engine sometimes )

also improved the off idle power a lot (helps with taking off and not reving it up a lot).

on another note, i recently (was forced to) fit a standard rear exhaust section (1/3/4"???) to the GTI front section (big bore manifold with twin downpipes joining under the handbrake lever) where before i had a 2" pipe with a genie turbo muffler.

with the standard rear exhaust and the gti headers, i've gained a big kick in the midrange - really much more driveable than before !
