upgraded fuse box? any idears

is there any straight swaps for mk1 golfs without having to replace the wiring harness ? has any body replaced there fuse box with a different models?

Most fuseboxes of the same age will go in the Golf. ie you can get one from a Jetta or Scirocco maybe.

What's the reason you need to know. Have you got a problem you need to sort out?

The ones with the ceramic fuses up to about 1980 are pretty crap.

Even one from an early mk2 would work.

76 fuse boxes are different I think. I have a brand new 77on fusebox going....
They are buggers of things!

yeah i pulled out the engine bay half of the harness today to find wires leading no where, dodgy conections and about 1000m of old crappy electrical tape, i have sorted out my lights as i had no high beams and no horn all fixed now and extended wires allowing me to hide the cables thus cleaning up the engine bay, but i remember driving it a few years ago and occasionaly seing the fuses glowing, 3 or 4 of the ceramic fuses consistantly get burn marks on them... pretty bad in my books...... im going to look in to that MK2 replacment tomorrow..

Yeah a post 1980 Golf has a heaps better fusebox. It wont directly plug in, but at least you will have proper fuses.

The only problem I've ever had with early fuseboxes is water contamination from rust in the A-pillar.
But other than that they work fine.
Like Loon said the later Mk1 fusboxes are better.
The easiest way to spot I've found, is that the headlights don't have the earth wire to the chassis leg that corrodes rather they are earthed inside the cabin.

I converted my whole car to 1999 CE2. It took a few full full days to connect and run the wires and then about 20-odd hours worth of splicing and deleting plugs.

It means you get !!WAY!! better headlights, for one thing, and way more reliability. Plus it's just nice to ditch that rotten Mk1 junk anyway.

The main problem is that you won't get a big, late model fuse box behind a Mk1 dash and most of them are rigged to mount on the RH side, so you have to make some brackets to mount them to the right of the Mk1 steering column, which is harder than it sounds!!!

I have an Audi 80 fuesbox that I am in the middle of wiring into my MK1. It s sooooo much better and almost everything has been a straight plug in. Little bit of heat shrink and solder but all good so far. I also put the Audis dash in. Its almost a straight fit. I had to do some cutting of this and that but its in and everything works.

Fuse box recon

Guys there is an auto electrical shop over here in WA that specialises in old card style fuse boxes and repaired my old one to be as good as new again and all for about $90, unfortunately he has ****loads of triumph and fiats in his shop but had no troubles what so ever reconditioning the golf. Goes by the name of green auto electrics (0 9446 8228. P.S. he also can redo alternators to 80Amp rather than the crappy 35 or 50 amp units, great for spotlights on rally cars

mail order a new one from the states, last one i got was about $125 with postage.

Have a look at the part number on the back I think only the "C " suffix is available now, and yes it has some different wiring tracks , Had to change some of the wire locations in a 76 that was being modded for a late "C" relay/fuse board.. Not difficult at all if you have a good manual.
