If you claim insurance they will write the car off as the parts are no longer available.Seen that happen locally here!
That's absolute garbage.. at worst they'll pay you a cash settlement to get it fixed. There's no way any insurance company would write off a perfectly good car for the sake of bent bumper. Today Tonight would have a field day.

yeh that is ridiculous...maybe they just love them so much they wnt to try and get as many mk'1 as they can if they couldn't get chromies they might just put plastics on.
Sorry I got bit carried away! They'd only write it off it the bumper was worth more than the car.. ie if you had it insured for $500. Considering the premium would be not much less than that it's a highly unlikely scenario. Secondly, if it was the case, you could buy the 'wreck' back off the insurance company and fix it yourself.
True, but I probably won't be making a claim as i could get it all fixed for thes than the $300 excess (and it's insured for $3000).
On a slightly different note, does any one else have an end cap for a right rear? The ones Stu has aren't the right one unfortunately. I found out that the longer part of the curve goes at the bottom of the cap when in situ.
if i had gone to the insurance company after i pranged my golf they would have written it off. (only $1500 worth of damage) but then again i guess i did bend a rail.
Yeah I spoke to a panel beater yesterday and he said that to have it all done properly through insurance (removing and replacing the bumper, including the trim, straightening it, rechroming it, touching up the paint where the bumper knocked it) it could come to $1400 worth . They might rather write the whole car off.
Even just giving the bumper to a good rechromer to get it straightened and rechromed could come to $400. (My excess is $300.) The rechroming is the killer as it would need it after bent knocked back into shape.
Gonna find a suitable replacement I think.
By the way does anyone have a good RHS bracket or a picture of one so I can tell if mine is bent? It always had a weird shape which I think is how it is meant to be but now it might be damaged.
Thanks once again folks

I reckon if it was mine, i'd have a go myself. Some wood blocks, the vice etc.. It wouldn't be perfect though.

1400 bucks sounds about right though.
I would like to be able to but I have almost no skills with my hands. I'm a thinker not a doer
Kind of frustrating when I want to do other simple stuff to my car but lack the confidence (and my Dad is getting too old and tired to help much anymore That's the way it goes when you're the youngest).

Reason: more rambling
$1400 is a joke. I can get you a brand new rear bar for $250
I'll fit it for free too
Yup, there is no way I'm heading down the $1400 path. By 'new' do you mean German or Mexican/Brazillian? I'm susssing some options so I may get back to you in this.
