  • Advancing Idle

How in heck does one advance the idle on the mk1 carb?

On the right hand side as you look at it from the front of the car. There is a big screw. Turn it in to decrease, out to increase idle.

          Have you got no idle?

Check the electrical connector to the cut off valve on the side of the carby. It should click when you turn the ignition on. Wire is probably old or fallen off.

If its not that, could be timing.

With the ignition on, remove and replace the wire. You should hear it click. If not, check circuit.

Its usually that, if not, can be the solenoid. Replace with a bolt or cut the plunger off for testing purposes.

the big screw is for air and shouldn't be adjusted on its own.The small screw next to it is for fuel mixture adjust that one as well.

Does the car run ok with no idle? We need more info.
                    Could be the idle jet.

                        Simplistic

Just advice from a diesel guy, but if your carbie is like most of that vintage it'll have an idle jet. Perhaps it's blocked?

You could try revving it and then with a gloved hand, block the top of the carby. Might suck the stuff oput of the carby. If that doesn`t work rebuild time.
